Bumpers...

Post by HowardT64 »

I would like to change out the stock bumpers I have, to
a diamond plate style. On the rear I would like a place to
bolt and lock a spare tire, with gerry cans on each side.

On the front I would like space enough to install a winch
later on, extra fog lights, tow hooks as well as have it wide
enough to stand on should i need to work under the hood.

My father in law has a welder and I was seriously thinking of
making my own. I am very mechanically inclined and can see
the plan in my head. But I do not know the exact setting should be
on a welder.

Any advice would be helpful... :?:

I was thinking of something similar to this, but modified so that
I can install the winch later.

Lots of things come into play here with the building.
What welder?
Wire, stick, tig?
A lot of the settings will be based on practice, joint design, material thickness, etc.

I'm sure that's a fine bumper.

I prefer things in close and tight.
I also prefer multiple mounting points, this has 12 points where it attaches to the frame and I can remove and install by myself minus the winch.

That is Incredible!!!! I love that design! As far as the type
of welder the father in law has...i do not know. But I can find
out. Do you have plans for the style of bumper you showed?

If so do you have a style for the rear and what would ya charge
for a copy? ( no I wont sell the design to anyone )

No design or plans, I built it step by step as you saw in the progression of pic's.
I used to do bumpers years ago, before life and work got this crazy.
My plan is to return to doing them after I retire, but that's a year out.

The back of my rig is chopped and the bumper is just 2x6 3/16" tube, notched and capped.
Nothing special.

What I do like about it is that the receiver is integrated into the rear crossmember along with a secondary crossmember brace and some simple brackets. I can remove (this is the second or third version on there) and change the rear bumper anytime I want and only have to modify around the receiver.
The receiver attaches like this: http://s149.photobucket.com/user/tadsal ... 20Receiver

I would just draw what you would like and have a few people critique them. I have a plan but I need some more experience on welding. I would like to use aluminium to save on weight.

Just something I threw together one weekend.Underneath is a trailer hitch mounted upside down. The idea was to get on of the Costco winches that go in in receiver.Never happened but the unit did get used for various other applications. The sheet steel was used to hid the hitch. Not pretty but it worked.
