my dana 60 cover

Post by 68glad »

I've wanted to build one of these for awhile now and decided to finally do it last weekend. Started off with cutting out a ring. Traced old cover and marked bolt holes.

A piece of cardboard helped make a template for this. Bending this piece was the hardest. A little heat did the trick. Take some time on this one. 3" min req to clear ring gear.(mine at least)

Then it's just a matter of cutting the pieces & tacking them in place. Oh, don't forget the fill plug.

I was going to just bolt it to the housing to keep from warping but decided not to. It wasn't my housing and I didn't want to get a bunch of junk in it when welding. I clamped it to the workbench instead, welding till it got hot then letting cool.

finished product!

I filled it with water to check for leaks and had a couple :( so the inside got welded.

I'm pretty happy with it and will prob do another one for the rear this weekend. For the time invested it would be way cheaper to just buy one but we all know that's not as cool as doing it yourself. I normally don't post things I do to the wag but a lot of others on here do & it helps get me motivated. Here's my contribution.

Pretty cool!

Surprised you didn't put a drain plug in it. They are so handy.

I build these almost daily for BTF, I will say that is better than when the new guys come in and I have to show them how to do it.

Definitely a cool factor doing it yourself! :-bd

never even thought of a drain hole.........if I did, it would be one of those allen head ones. I don't want a big plug sticking out down low. After thinking about it, even w/ a plug your still going to need a pan to catch some oil. You couldn't get the plug low enough to drain everything. Am I missing something?

Blake: I appreciate the interest but I have too much other stuff going on right now.

Typically if you change your fluid often you don't have to get every last drop out. Its mostly to get any contaminates out. And if you do need to get it all out, its WAY less messy if you get 90% of it out before cracking the cover. Then only a little bit spills out.
