Intake Air Temperatures

Post by cpfeifffer »

Good morning.

I am looking for some advice on managing Intake Air Temperatures (IAT).

I have done an LS swap and am overall happy with it. The engine is a 5.3L L33 from a 2006 Chevy Silverado. I have ceramic coated headers.

Engine coolant temps are consistently around 215 F, even when it is 100 F down here in Houston. So, no problem there.

My IAT is around 50 degrees above ambient temp. I'd love to draw air in from the outside. All the options I've seen involve cutting the splash apron/wheel well and relocating the battery.

I'm not against cutting it if necessary but I'm trying to keep it looking clean. Does anyone have a magic solution that I haven't discovered?

Find a later V8 FSJ and take the parts you need.

Tim, thanks for the quick response.

I'm sorry if I wasn't clear but I'm looking for a filter housing. I'd like to use that port and duct it over to a filter housing.

With the LS swap, there isn't the traditional air cleaner on top that I can connect to the port on as you've shown.

Watching, I have the same issue. If I install a combo heat/a/c unit I'll relocate the battery and build a box, but I'm happy with the heat and defrost currently so an underdash unit may be my A/C choice. I've looked at doing box without relocating the battery but it is some intense cutting and modifying the inner fender to get an OEM style flat filter panel box in that spot, doable but a lot of cutting and building.

I had this issue as well on my LS - also an 06 5.3 L33. Since I have an aftermarket AC my battery is on the passenger firewall and my filter resides where the battery originally was. With the filter in this spot I was running close to 150 F on the highway. My fix was cutting a 3.25" hole right in front of the air filter in the core support. Immediate difference now running just above 100F. The hole is right behind where the passenger pie pan would be on a rhino grille truck.

It wouldn't take much to put a flat panel filter box in that spot and feed it directly into the box. Part of the issue is there is very little airflow into the engine bay without going through the radiator. Not a bad thing for the radiator, but not good for IAC temps and firewall/floorboard temps. Glad to see a 3-1/2" hole makes a sizeable difference, may wind up with 2 of those with our without the battery relocate
