Holley 12-887 Fuel Pressure regulator

Post by Grand_Wag_85 »

Just installed a 5-7PSI in tank pump on my '77. Works great but has a tendancy to flood the truck avenger carb. I'm looking at a Holley 12-887 return style fuel pressure regulator and trying to figure out the best place to mount it. First choice would be ahead of the fuel tank on the frame rail so the return never goes into the engine bay BUT the instructions say to mount it as close to the carb as practical.

Any of you done this setup?

Why are you doubting the instructions? I would fab a bracket and mount it on top of the engine, next to the carburetor. Or on the firewall behind the carburetor. The factory fuel return already goes to the front of the engine.

My only concern is vapor lock and trying to keep as much heat away from the fuel as possible. Even with the in tank pump it was still trying to vapor lock.

Do you have headers or some other condition that makes the under-hood temperature excessively high? If so, I think that's what I would address, rather than the side effects on other components.

I found a lot to look at when I searched the topic online - https://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/thr ... t.1149091/

I understand that Holley's tech support is responsive. You might run it past them and ask what will happen if you mount it back by the fuel pump.

I’ll have to reach out to Holley.

Stock manifolds. I live at 10ooo+FT so that does not help at all lol.

You will want to mount it close to carb.On our drag racing cars we would mount it on firewall or inner fender not on engine

The trouble spot on the factory configuration is where the hard line runs just a couple of inches away from the driver side exhaust manifold. Relocate and/or insulate it from that heat source and your problem should go away.

firewall is a bit cramped, but the inner fender is perfect.

You can always reroute the return line by tweaking the metal line which comes near the bottom of the power steering, on the frame. This is what I did when I installed the fuel filter on the inner fender, no need to cook the fuel above the valve cover/exhaust manifold

you can see on the picture that the original inflow metal fuel line is still installed... but I used a rubber one with some insulation.... funny this was done in August 2011
