Stock oil pressure gauge vs aftermarket. A comparison

I added an aftermarket Autometer gauge with a 'stepper motor' for monitoring oil pressure.

I was a bit surprised to find that the stock gauge reads pretty close to the new gauge when the oil pressure is steady. (83 Cherokee)

One advantage to the new gauge is it reports the oil pressure right at start up, the stock gauge slowly moves to the pressure level.
Another advantage of the new gauge is it quickly moves with the changes in RPM. The stock gauge does not.

I just got the new gauge hooked up so will report back more as I get used to it. For now I get almost 60psi at startup/high idle. It drops to about 40 when the oil warms up and the engine idle gets to normal and in drive, at idle, it shows about 25psi.

I am running 10/30 Valvoline VR1 and a WIX filter.

This is an electric gauge that has a faster response? The usual critique of electric pressure gauges is slow response. A mechanical gauge typically moves instantaneously, moving up off idle along with engine speed.

You understand that even multivis oil is thicker at low temperatures; a 10W30 behaves like 10 wt single grade at ca -10F, and like 30 wt at 200F. The additive that provides this behavior breaks down as the oil ages. Idle pressure will drop as the oil heats up.

I do 'understand' that multivis oil will act differently under different temps but this will be my first real world at observing the impact. I also installed an oil temp gauge. I will be interested to record what the 'normal' oil temp is for my rig.

Was thinking about adding a set of after market gauges to mine, when I get to the point of road ready, so this will be helpful.
