Here’s the Heep itself … needs a lot of work but I’ve grown attached already…

This is definitely not a 79 axle. That axle was originally for an 83 or 84 FSJ and is a left hand differential with vacuum disconnect. That is not going to work for you unless you are doing a drivetrain swap that has left hand output shaft on transfer case and then you'll have to deal with locking the axle shaft on the front.

There is a passenger drop wagoneer 44 front and 12 bolt rear axle for sale on Craigslist in Indio. Guy is asking $1500 for the pair.

That axle looks like a WT Cherokee axle, not a wagoneer axle. The difference being the width. The amount of tube on the passenger side if the giveaway.

Good catch Stuka. Maybe I was subconsciously hoping another person in San Diego county would be up for doing a WT conversion.

Thanks for the confirmation fulsizjeep, it’s a good thing my wife says I’m a hoarder since I figure I’ll just set the axle aside and hold onto it just in case I could use it later… you guys know if it’s a desirable axle worth taking up space for a minute? Eventually all this stuff will make more sense to me.

And thanks for trying M almost earned yourself a pack of beer for your finders fee. That would’ve been funny if I jumped on it and made the trip to Indio yikes…. I’ll keep looking eventually I’ll find the right one. I’ll post pics here first hopefully you guys don’t mind giving me your advice before I buy another one.

Sadly, no. That's probably the least desirable front D44 axle because of the vacuum disconnect :(

so I pretty much bought a huge paper weight lol. Oh well I guess it’s the price I pay for experience.

Hey guys I’ve been looking around for another front Dana 44… no luck for a minute but I finally came across this one. Looks about right but I’ve got she’ll shock from my first purchase so I figured I’d ask the experts.

I asked the guy for the BOM but it’s covered in layers of dirt. He said he’d try to get a wire wheel and see if he can find the actual number.

What’s your guys thoughts? Should work right… it looks about right but I’m not entirely sure.

Thanks again for your guys help.

Ask him to measure the width to confirm is not a widetrack. And good news is you should be able to steal most of the outers from the other axle you bought.

Hard to read the last digit of the part number. A 5357685 is a 1977-79 3.54 axle with a 2 15/16" diameter axle tube, delivered with models 15-16-18 (Wagoneer, 2dr/4dr Cherokee). Ergo narrow track, if it has the right tag and the last digit is a 5.

I’m going to go see it in person and hopefully I can get the right numbers off of it.

It’ll be a huge plus if I can use parts off the 83-84 Dana 44 to get it complete.. that would justify me having kept it. I almost gave it away .

As far as the tag on the pumpkin.. I’m leaning more towards a 6 in the last digit. I tried finding the information on the WWW but I can’t seem to pinpoint that info. Let’s say it is a 6 what would that mean?

If it's a 5357686, it's a wide track, models 17-25-45 (wide track Cherokee, SWB/LWB J10).

Thank you for the information that’s really helpful and much appreciated.

Im going to see if I can get clearer pictures and maybe … hopefully the actual BOM from the guy. I think it’ll help confirm yay or nay.. last thing I want is to end up with something else that isn’t what I’m actually looking for.

Thanks again for your guys info.

I’m still out there looking for the right front axle… still no luck. That one I had before did turn out to be a wide track.Image

I however found this in my searches… what’s your guys thoughts on installing a 401 in a earlier model wagoneer? Would you want to keep it somewhat all stock minus some small upgrades? Or go all out and install the 401 with maybe even the T15 trans.
