Torque Converter Choice

Post by Tio Pancho »

Hey all. New motor is in. Tranny is rebuilt Looking for opinions on torque converter choice. Diff's are 3.73 gears. Trans is stock 400. Tires will be 33 x 12.50 and running a small lift. This will be a weekend cruiser/camper/mild crawler.

Should I be looking at anything other than a stock torque converter?
Thanks in advance.

I would do stock, makes less heat, better mileage and a little better control crawling. Unless the new motor has some crazy cam should be just fine.

Ran that same basic cam with a sbc and a th400 with a stock converter for a few hundred thousand miles quite happily

I invested in a TCI 2000 stall converter last year and I cant be happier. It is so much more fun to drive than before, it dosent get hot and with 35" tires/ 3.73 gears Im at stall around 45 mph. Surely, gas mileage went from bad to worse but its definitely worth it. I also installed a TF2 shift kit for firmer shifts and higher shift speeds.

As an inexpensive higher stall option, a TH350 converter will fit right in and has a slightly higher stall speed than a TH400. I just haven't thought about it in 20 years...LOL.. if memory serves me correctly TH400 is 12-1400 and TH350 is 14-1600. And as a side benefit the TH350 is smaller so it there is less rotating mass, effectively freeing up some horsepower, doesn't change torque but makes it feel more "lively".
