Clutch

Post by Longjohn61 »

Hi all :)
It is time for a new clutch in my fsj.
The p.o swapped the 258 for a 4.0l engine but kept the gearbox a T4 and bellhouse but the starter is from a 4.0l.
The question is what about the clutch? Fits a stock fsj clutch on a 4.0l flywheel or not.
I am not sure what i need tried to make a picture with a inspection camera but it is difficult to see .
The only thing that i could see whas that the clutch cover has mor than 3 fingers when i compare it with the picture in the fsm.
So i do not know what to buy.
Any ideas?

Greetings from sweden

Hi Nils - the T-4 never came in the Cherokee as far as I know. There were some that had the T-5; maybe that's what you are thinking? More likely it's a T-176 with a 258.

The original bellhousing and flywheel from the 258 will bolt up to the 4.0L. I'm not sure whether the starter requires the 4.0L flywheel or if it will work with the 258 flywheel. Regardless, either the 4.0L clutch or 258 clutch should bolt up to either flywheel.

I would get a kit for the Jeep with its original equipment. The clutch disk and pressure plate should be right. The 258 got the 10.5" clutch. If it were mine, I would get the Luk or Sachs or Valleo kit meant for this vehicle. You may have a choice between Borg&Beck style (3 release arms) or diaphragm style (many fingers). The diaphragm type is generally easier to operate, but either will work.

Then you'll have to see if the release bearing and pilot bearing in the kit match. If not, you'll have to figure out what you've got.

Any idea what year and vehicle type (ie XJ Cherokee, TJ Wrangler, etc) the engine came from? Do you have the 4.0L fuel injection, or a carburetor? Are you using the original mechanical clutch linkage, or hydraulic linkage possibly from the 4.0L donor?

Hi Tim thanks.
Your right the jeep had a T176 but that one was replaced by the T4 from i think a cj.
What i know is that a starter from a 258 will not fit the 4.0 flywheel.
So i maybe i have a 4.0 flywheel and thats why i was wondering if a clutch kit for a fsj will fit on that flywheel.
are you sure 10,5" ? the fsm said 11" for the fsj and 10.5" for the cj.
Do you know if the clutch kit from a v8 will fit? i looked on bjs off road they did not have a kit for the i6 only for the v8.
The engine came from what i know a 93 wrangler i have the older style pcm (big black unit) for a manual gearbox.
Not easy to find a clutch kit here in sweden and this is my daily driver.

My factory parts book says all 1980 258s got a 10.5" Borg&Beck clutch. '78-79 258 FSJs got the 11" combo, but all the rest of the 232s, 258s and 304s got 10.5". My 1982 TSM says all Jeep 258s get a 10.5" clutch.

AFAIK the 4.0L and 258 flywheels are interchangeable, apparently except for the ring gear. The 4.0L flywheel has a tone ring of some type on its perimeter for a magnetic pickup used by the 4.0L EFI. This may go along with different starter and ring gear. Both flywheels are neutral balanced and will accept any of the clutches meant for the earlier AMC inline 6s and V8s, again AFAIK. There will be two sets of holes in the face of the flywheel, both outside the area where the clutch plate would be.

If you go for the 258 clutch kit, there should be no difference between a kit for a CJ and for a FSJ. If you have a bell and linkage parts for a T-4 from a CJ, I would consider a clutch kit for a CJ with the 258 and T-4. By 1982, Jeep offered the 258 in a CJ-5 and CJ-7 with a T-4 and manual clutch linkage. I think this combo is most likely to match your T-4 and 4.0L. https://www.rockauto.com/en/catalog/jee ... h+kit,1993

I should have the bellhouse for the T-4 ass well the linkage. So i think you are probably right. No adapter or home made stuff there.
Never thought about looking for a cj clutch kit but thanks for the input here.
Came the cj with the T-4 and the NP-208 as a combo? Thats the transfercase on mine.
Thanks for the link.

No, the CJs never got the chain-driven transfer cases. They had a passenger-side drop Dana 300 starting in 1980 to the end of the CJ. The YJ Wrangler went driver-side drop and chain driven in 1988? - sometime like that.

I don't know if the T-4 would bolt up to the NP208 ... maybe. The pattern is the same but you'd have to compare the spline count.
