ax15, dana 300 project.

Post by 230ohc »

Hello all,

So far I've just started sourcing parts and managed to find a decent transmission, it's an early version which has lower first and reverse ...I think., and a really nice transfercase. I've noticed the shifter is almost 3" further back which I think should be OK and the tail shaft housing is an inch or two longer than my current long shaft t18. Any suggestions of as to what else might be different that I'll need to pay attention to. I imagine the driveshaft lengths will need some adjustment.
anything else?

Ah yes speedo, slave cylinder...

NOVAK adapters has a Master/Slave kit for the conversion. I used a low profile master with remote bowl to clear the Booster.

How did you like the transmission?

Also I'm entertaining the idea of getting a $75 clocking ring. But it doesn't have the stick out for the bearing retainer like the novak one, should I spend the extra $113 for the bearing retainer support.?

Im not sure about the clocking ring. I did use a cheepy and it wouldnt allow the trans to seal. So, I had to add a Speedy Sleeve to extend the shaft. Later, I used the ring as a templated and drilled/tapped the holes in the D300 case and everything sealed fine w/o the speedy Sleeve.

How much do you need to rotate it? On mine I made plugs to press into the holes, redrilled them and made a tool to back-spotface the holes out of a spade bit.

Didn't get toooo close to any of the webs on the NV4500 to D300 housing from Advance but that's what I made my clocking limit.

I seem to need a spacer, unless I cut the output shaft, then maybe drill and tap would work. I'll have to double check it. I only just tried it once in two positions and maybe it was getting hung up the mount, the transmission was really dirty like rear main seal leaked so I cleaned everything up but haven't tried it yet again.

Thanks for mentioning the transmission seal issue I figured not having a snout on the spacer would cause a problem, and that makes sense not being able to get centered. So now I may spring for the bearing retainer conversion and keep my t18 bell housing. IDK need to do a little more research on this.

So I decided to use an AA ring. Just what I could get through summitracing. I've done a mock up assembly of the ax15 and dana 300 , started taking measurements and it only became apparent just now that my driveline angle seems off. Where the crank pulley centerline is higher than the transfercase rear output.

Does that matter ?

It is convenient in current format with the oil pan being a good distance from the front diff, and I cannot change the rear too much, I hope this doesn't cause any problems.

Anyway the ax15 has a fairly large mount set up so I should be able to drill out a pattern to bolt up a rubber mount at 25" behind the back of the engine adapter plate.

Everything looks pretty good to get started.

Anybody know of what year and make would have a rear shaft with a good 1310 slip shaft that is long enough to be cut down for to size?

Anybody know of what year and make would have a rear shaft with a good 1310 slip shaft that is long enough to be cut down for to shorten to size?
