Transfer case and front axle questions

Post by Azicafoose »

Back story,

We have a 2007 Dodge Durango with the nv244 transfer case. In another year or so, we will be upgrading to a newer Suburban. Well I’m thinking hard about pulling the drivetrain from the Durango and planting it in my 87 Grand Wagoneer named Cliff.

The NV 244 is AWD, 4wd lock, 4wd low lock. With the lock-in lockout hubs on the front Dana 44, how do I run them, I’m new to lock in lock out, I had a 88 Dodge 100 with automatic hubs that’s the closest to this as I’ve come.

Will running the AWD transfer case cause problems with the manual hubs.

Thanks in advance.

You'd probably run into sensor issues. Isn't the 244 connected to a computer of some kind?

Yes it is, but I’m not concerned with that at the moment. More with the physical mechanics.

It would be best to swap out the locking hubs for drive slugs that are always engaged, which your 87 would have come with from the factory. The 244 is basically a newer version of what you should already have. Which would be an NP229, which has AWD, 2wd hi (no lock), and 4wd low lock.

Yeah. My Waggie has a number of options that supposedly weren’t available in 87. I figure it was an early model, it’s titled as an AMC.

Fleet vehicles were available with an NP208, which is a part time case that came with manual locking hubs.

Cool fun fact! I didn’t know that was a thing.

These were typically very low optioned models used by the forest service and the like.

To know for sure, there should be a round plate (single screw in the center) on the back of your transfer case which should either say AM208 or AM229.
