Question For the Real Gurus

Post by OldFarmTruck22 »

Answer this question correct and it shows your knowledge of FSJ. In 1978 what WIDTH and back spacing wheels did the factory put on the WT Chief with the optional 'Floatation Tire'. That's what they called them in the sales brochures back then. I think it was a 30 x 10.00 x 15 tire?

The old schoolers should know the answer to this one.

Thanks

I can tell you the wheel size was 15x8. I will see if I can find the backspacing in the 78 factory service manual. The tire was a 15x10. Not 100% sure on the height though.

There most certainly was. H78-15 is supposed to be equal to a 225/75-15.

I read an old sales brochure from the time. They listed it as '30" Floatation'. Those tires were an option even with the WT package.

There is no really good conversion chart that I have found that is consistent from chart to chart. depending on which chart you look at H78-15 is either 215/75-15 or 225/75-15, but I've seen them crossed to 205/75-15 and 235/75-15's too. Same goes for the flotation sizes I've seen that 30" reference crossed to 235/75-15, 255/75-15, 30x9.50-15 and 31x10.50-15. logic would say it is somewhere in the 30" range, they are all in that range +/- 1". Same goes for the 10-15 that was popular on the Honcho and Chief's. Typically, they go to a 31x10.50-15 but I've also seen them crossed to 265/75-15, 30x9.50-15, 32x11.50-15, 33x10.50-15, heck even 33x12.50-15. I think it comes down to a tire that whoever made the chart thinks they can support. Logic suggests to me that any of the "floatation" tires would be equal to a 30x9.50-15 or 31x10.50-15. The 60's and 70's were a tough time to keep up with tire sizes and converted to the now standard metric or actual (well... sort of...) inch measurements.

I feel like I threw up on the computer screen with data   :P

I have spent way too many hours researching this to satisfy my own curiosity :P

Lol I've done some research on this too. I don't have a chance at answering the question though; the late '70s/early '80s FSJs are the ones that I don't have much info about.

There are 2 major differences between new Wranglers and FSJs. FSJs are meant to be both utilitarian and capable, not just capable. FSJs are also rarely initially recognized as Jeeps by the average American.

Tried to do a drag and drop with the dealer brochure but the file is too large. The 10-15 option was a Goodyear AT tire only available with the WT package and still an option within that package. 10" tread width x 31" tall.

There was a white spoked and a chrome spoked wheel for the Cherokee WT and J10. Some call them wagon wheels. 15x8 and pretty sure the back spacing is 4", possibly 3.75". In 76 there was a shortage of the white spoke wheels and AMC used a wheel from GM for the 4wd 1/2 ton series. I believe these had same dimensions. The GM wheels were silver and the Jeep version was white.

I actually have an original spare tire from one of the many model 17 cherokees I have owned. It is in fact a Goodyear AT and I believe in a 10-15 size. This tire appears to never have been used.
I used to name my FSJ’s after their previous owners, I realized I had too many with five named Rick.

A bit of a misleading post here. The Widetrack (model17) is not a package. The “packages” for the model 17 were the “S”, “Golden Eagle” and “Chief.
