Removing air pump bolts from exhaust manifold ports

Post by Tessier »

I’ve removed 6 of the 7 bolts but the last one sheared off leaving a mangled stub. I was able to stuff it with a smaller bolt until I can figure out how to remove it. Tried soaking it with lube, using a torch to heat it up, and using an easy out tool.

Any other suggestions?

Do you have access to a welder? You may be able to weld a small bolt to the remnants of the bolt.

Why did the easy out tool not work? Couldn't get it to bite into the old stub?

1/4" carbide bit in a die grinder. Grind away enough so you can collapse the remains of the bolt.

At this point you might find it is easier to fix if you remove the manifold.

The easy out threads were tearing off.

I’m going to try to weld next.

Yeah, there really isn’t that much room to work!

Yeah, that would have to be with the manifold removed. I’m really trying to avoid that as it presents its own problems with the manifold mounting bolts…

When mine snapped-off, I cut the bolt flush, then tapped the hole in that banjo-bolt and plugged it with a bolt and some high-temp rtv around the threads.

I had similar issue, had to remove it to get access it, to get good bite on internal threads and chisel out what was there.
Had to heat it up too, and PB Blaster penetrating oil.
When you put it back together use anti- seize paste.
