Transfer case vent 1990 Grand Wagoneer

Post by RustyDusty »

As I was under the greasy beast trying to change the hoses on the gas tank vents, I believe that I saw that the vent for the transfer case (NP229) ends high on the firewall with a 180° downturn (like a candy cane!) Is this low tech solution the actual vent? Could the same solution be utilized for the missing front diff vent?

Thanks for the help.

I might lament the amount of grease and oil on the underside, until I think about the lack of rust.

If the '90 is like earlier models, the front vent should have a plastic cap under a clamp on one of the radiator bolts. This connects to a rubber hose that goes to a niple on the differential. I think the nipple should be on the axle tube, near the center of the axle.

You could do the U-bend for the front axle, or a small fuel filter works too. There are replacements available for the original-style vents - not for Jeep but for other brands. https://www.dormanproducts.com/p-89204-924-284.aspx Any parts store can get Dorman stuff in a day at most.

This is from my '81 CJ5, but should be similar to how yours should be run off front diff, as Tim pointed out.

Small hose with white cap is the vent for front diff.
