Door Key Function

Post by SJTD »

Reinstalling the wiring in my '84 and working on the front doors. Moving the door and window switches to the dash.

Can anyone verify that the keys in the front doors do not unlock the other doors? I'm looking at the wiring diagrams and don't see any key switches and my doors are buried in the shed. Can't remember from 20 years ago. I thought they did but that's more of an assumption than a recollection.

Thanks.

To my knowledge, using the key to unlock the driver door does not unlock other doors. You have to use the switch to unlock the others (outside of manually pulling up the knobs on them).

Thank you for the confirmation. Now I'm wondering if the door locks from an XJ would fit and allow that but I should continue with assembly and not make more unnecessary gee whiz kinda work.

IIRC I got two keys with my '77 and '82, one that unlocks the doors (rounded shape) and one for the ignition (rectangular shape). No difference left or right door.

My understanding is that there isnt any electronics from the keylock to activate the door locks. I believe that the electrical door locks are only controlled from the switches inside.

Yeah, I'm proceeding with that assumption. Going to install a remote anyhoo. If it goes dead I'll just have to use the key until I change the battery.
