Anyone have one or can point to one? Putting the dash back in and have a rod about 5" long with a 1/2" hole on one end and two captive nuts on the other I can't seem to figger out where it goes.
Thanks.

Is it the one that supports the brake pedal assembly? There is a little bar that connects a bracket underneath the windshield to the L-shaped brake/steering column support.
Thanks for posting that but '78 must be different. I don't have that tab up there next to the wiper bearing. I have two long rods that go back from the cowl to the column support on the dash. One starts maybe eight inches left of that one and the other three inches or so below that one and a little right.
From the rust and fit it seems that my extra piece starts at the left bolt on the dash under the long rod and heads forward and to the left.
I changed the dash to the early version so maybe it's a remnant from the '84 but but right now it looks like a spare piece.
Thanks again.

My '82 has a similar odd post under the dash with no obvious purpose. My truck is a manual so I thought it might relate to the automatic or other pedal or something. Nothing similar in the parts book under brakes or steering or instrument panel. Perhaps it's vestigial. Might be item 10.340-1, Steering gear jacket tube support rod. Maybe something to do with the automatic shifting.

Looks like the two at yellow arrows are in the parts books. To me, the mystery part is at the red arrow. It's hanging in mid-air and does nothing I can see.

Maybe someone with a 230-era vehicle can look to see if it has some function in that era.

Those pics seem to verify the position I assumed from the rust or lack of it. Good to hear it did nothing in '82. I'm leaving it out and using a couple washers to make up the thickness rather than trying to bend the other rod.
Thanks for the answers and pics.

tear down pictures from last Jan .... that rod ties into an additional rod that connects to kick panel to provide support.
Good refresher or me as I'll be reassembling sometime soon.
Second bracket (black) it connects to
lower bracket / rod connecting to kick panel behind parking brake
It's possible I might have more pictures but this should help. I'm getting to the point of putting my stuff back together so this was a good refresher.

I don't seem to have that hole in the kick panel. I know I didn't fill any bolt holes there. Also, when removing hardware I generally put the bolts back in their holes and there where no bolts left in the rod in question. All the other support rods/mounting points had the requisite bolts in place when I went to reinstall them.
I do have another question since I have you here. The big bundle of wires for the window and door lock motors that runs between the left and right kick panels. Is it mounted against the firewall? I think so but that pic doesn't quite show it.
Thanks again.

Oops, I do indeed have that hole in the kick panel as well as a bit of paint residue on the top of the rod in question that I had noticed before. That sent me on a search for the rod you showed which I found. Idunno why the bolts weren't in the original rod.
Being a good Engineer with respect for the work of others unless I can show they were wrong I will install it though it seems superfluous to at a quick glance. Just have to find the three bolts.

Huh. My '82 is a 4-speed and fixed column, so there's nothing on the column except the wheel, horn, ignition lock and flasher/indicator switches. Maybe it's needed with an automatic or tilt column.

I don't see what difference it would make with a manual and no tilt but who knows? Any chance someone removed it? Any marks on the floor?

I had manual windows and locks so no motors.
I tried to find a good picture of the harness before I started pulling things apart just in case it would be useful but no luck. Nothing indicating any of the harness mounted to firewall aside from the main bulkhead through firewall.

Thanks anyway. Maybe I'll start a new thread to ask this on the other site.

There is a threaded hole at the floor, as in the above pic. Looks like it had a bolt in it at some point. I would assume that mine had the brace, and a PO removed it.
