Brakes...

Post by Moparmikeo »

This is the first of many probably dumb questions but...
Patient is "Roscoe" 1982 Wagoneer Limited that has been sitting since 2013.
This project, replacing EVERYTHING in the braking system, except the proportioning valve and power booster....

Brake bleeding procedure references the "special tool" to hold the valve open when bleeding. Is there a work around this, bleed the brakes and disregard the step or ?????

Thanks in advance!

The tool is a bent piece of steel with a slot that holds the valve stem. I just made one. Maybe it's needed, maybe not. Likely you can buy the tool if you search for it.

If the TSM says you need it, I would not question it. The TSM was written as a reference for dealership techs (mechanics), and they would not include unneeded extra steps that would take more time.

Just FYI, replacement combo valves are available.

In my experience, you only need the special tool if bleeding the brakes the old fashioned way (with a person pushing the pedal). I have never needed to hold the valve when using a mighty vac. But, your mileage may vary.

I have a pressure bleeder (not fancy but workable), and used the tool. Dealerships have a high-end pressure bleeder that they would use for this.

Oh, true. The pressure bleeders would also need to use the tool.

I use speed bleeders. Love them.
