727 Auto Transmission ID help needed

Post by devildog80 »

I have a spare 727 trans that came with my '84 Grand Wagoneer, and trying to ID what vehicle it came from, year made, etc.

I have spent hours researching the web, and most all references I see, the number should start with a letter or letters like PK.

Mine does not have that.

Anybody know?

Here is the number stamped in the casting just above the pan on passenger side.

727 transmission casting number 8953001836 8308 3267
Day 8308 is Thursday, April 26, 1984

The only ID I needed for info is bellhousing style (determines if a Chrysler big or small block, AMC, or International application) and input spline style (lockup/non lockup). Everything else is pretty much the same if rebuilding.

If its an AMC version, the only difference is whether its a non- Lock-up or Lock-up. I believe the Lock-up was only two years and the input shaft has an extended length.

No experience with these numbers; however, did you look for a part number in the factory parts book? Online at the Tom Collins site.

Did not check parts book, as I have the download of the only complete manual close to the '84 year, and that was the '82 manual.

Will look there to see what it shows.

Best I could find was the breakdown of the Chrysler 10,000 day calendar, that should be the date I posted above, and that the shaft appears this is a non-lock up.

As said, this is a spare trans that came with the truck, so trying to help identify it for someone who might use it for rebuild.

I can only guess why the PO would keep it, but did find receipts that he did have some trans/TC troubles in the late '90's, with last year truck registered was '04.

Hope he resolved the issues back then, and I do understand it is best to go through an auto trans after sitting so long, as it reduces the chance in the break down equation later.

Thought about keeping it, and try my hand at rebuilding it with my teen grandson, but do not plan to run the truck as hard as the PO might have off road, so should be ok with just one trans.....the one in the truck now!

My use will be mostly highway miles, but pulling a camper and gear, so want trans in tip top shape.

Thanks all for input so far :)
