interchangeable BBD parts

Post by marc »

Friends, I have a spare BBD carb, model 8384, via craigslist. It has already paid for itself by supplying a stepper motor to replace the broken one out of my 84 J10 258. Problem is that I have no idea if the carb in the truck is the specified 8340 as the tag and stamp are missing. Anyone know if the venturi clusters and the intake tube assembly are interchangeable between the two models? If they are, I would get the spare one drilled out to 0.032. After the carb rebuild, I forgot to ask the rebuilder to bore the tubes out. After the rebuild, the truck ran well but is beginning to idle roughly.
Thanks, Marc

The idling roughly bit is a VERY common issue with the BBD. Its the reason the majority of us ditch it and go to a Weber or MC2150.

As for the two versions that you have: the 8384 is for an auto, and the 8340 is for a manual. The difference may be as simple as one having a provision for a kick down. I would not expect there to be big differences.
