newbie question about starting vehicle in 4H

Post by marc »

Have had the opportunity to put the j10's NP208 to test in icy/packed snow conditions here in Seattle. Performed admirably in 4H with 300 lbs. over the rear axle. I also have the original owners manual that came with the vehicle, it makes a point of talking about getting the vehicle going in 2H then at 2-3 mph, shifting into 4H. Thing is, can't even get it out of where its' parked without being in 4H without salting a big chunk of the alley. Went ahead and put it into 4H while stationary and it seemed to be fine. Can you start it in 4H and just take off?

By the way, had the BBD rebuilt by Edmonds auto parts and Marine, after tuning, it is starting with little problem.

You can shift to 4 Hi at almost any speed, as well as being stopped. 4 Lo however requires rolling at a slow speed while in neutral to shift in and out of most of the time.

Yes, starting in 4H is fine with the 208. It just sometimes takes a bit of motion to get it to shift into 4H, but if it’s already in 4H, your good to go!
