Was this offered when new

Post by Horsman »

Mounted behind the grill of my 79 Wagoneer is a transmission cooler, it is secured in four locations on the core support that look to be factory holes.

Was this offered from the factory or maybe a dealer added option?
Since my rig has the Turbo 400 and I don’t plan on towing or serious off-roading is the transmission cooler even needed?
Last, I found a small rubber tranny cooler hose attached at the radiator cooler and one of the metal transmission cooler lines that run along the engine oil span rail back to the transmission, is that hose OEM and does someone offer replacements?

Thanks in advance!

The original cooler is in the bottom tank of the radiator. There were 3/8" steel lines that connected the transmission to the radiator, rigid coupled at the transmission with special rubber hoses at the radiator end. 5350540 covers the V8s '74-79, so these should work even though they are meant for a C101/C104. https://stores.partsdude4x4.net/th-400- ... ando-each/ I expect you could make them, and the hard lines, rather easily. No source for replacement hard lines, AFAIK.

The parts book does not show an added cooler, in either regular or special equipment. Possible that it's an aftermarket brand like Hayden made for the application, and originating in the day.

Thanks Tim, I suspected the cooler was not OEM or needed. Glad my metal cooler lines are in great shape, just need the two small rubber lines at the radiator cooler locations. I appreciate your response.

My 81 came with a factory cooler as part of the 'towing' package.
