Starter motor O.E.M. part ?

Post by Kiwi Honcho »

Hi,
I have a 76 J10 with a 401 motor and turbo hyrdamatic box. Can someone tell me the O.E.M. starter motor part number as it came fitted with a 9tooth (6 Cylinder?) starter which has chewed up the flex plate. The flex plate appears to be a finer tooth setup, perhaps 11 tooth also the original starter did not full engage the flexplate and chewed the first 1/4" all around the flexplate. I have fitted a new flex plate but don't want the same problem again.
I imprinted both the flexplate and the starter pinion onto a piece of paper and both measure different distances tooth tip to tooth tip when I compare them.
Thank's

Unfortunately the factory parts book does not list these by application, but by part number next to an illustration.

It's probably a 3212235 Motorcraft. I see no distinction between the engine displacement - 6 or V8 - for this application.

In '77ish they went to either a 3231372, 3231371 or 5752791 AMC starter with apparently the same design as the Motorcraft. Looks like these interchange with each other but not the Motorcraft.
