Has anyone seen a hitch like this on a j10/j20? I am trying to figure out how much I can tow with my '79 J20.
I looks to be be homemade however Im not sure if it was some kind of option or dealer install somewhere. I may end up with a full receiver if we cant figure out this setup.

What's the derogatory word for an amateur modification that's poorly built and looks dangerous? This was put together from scraps of steel. I would trust the bumper hitch more. To me, this does nothing but lower the height of the ball.
IIRC Rocklaurence sells a bona fide hitch that bolts to the frame. You could bolt a receiver to the bottom of the bumper, but I would only use it as a convenient way to haul my trash trailer or such.

X2, this is some thing as a Temporary setup to move items in your driveway or around the yard--not on the street. You can have a custom hitch built or purchase one here: https://rocklaurencevintageautoparts.co ... ch-1975-87

I figured as much it was homemade. It was a farm truck so whatever it was used for was never fast passed.
I was going to get the BJ offroad hitch over the rock Laurence. I dont like how the rock Laurence is bolted together compared to the BJ's whole welded assembly.

The BJ's offroad hitch only fits Wagoneers and Cherokees. J-Trucks have MUCH wider frames in back and their hit will not work. You could easily weld up Rocklaurence's hitch once you have it mounted if you want that extra regidity.
