Overhead console computer source

Post by Johnzi10 »

So I’m so psyched to drive my 89 GW now that my rear window works. As I’m planning what’s next( gas tank, shocks, springs, door relays ,wipes, etc) I wanted to address an easier task.I know the Chrysler overhead console was used on several vehicles. Want to try pick and pull before eBay. Has anyone done the research on cross referencing models? My console is perfect other than the compass/temp computer is non functional!

You can fix the console computer. Do me a favor. Take the black box out of the console and renove the cover and take the circuit board out and snap some pictures of it. Normally its just the capacitors that blow on these. The 4 consoles ive repaired including my 90s had the brown caps blown. I sourced new capacitors and the crystal and buttons. And just unsoldered them and soldered the new ones on.

Was a fairly easy fix. I also replaced all the buttons of all the dome lights. They tend to be bad and dont click anymore. Another easy fix.

If youre unlucky the circuit board fried taking traces and resistors with it. But that too is still fixable its just a little more time consuming.

Snap a pic of your circuit board up close and look at the caps for any that are buldging or leaking or clearly poped. The link is my thread i made years ago. Not many pics. But if you read the thread you will get an idea of how i did it. And you will also know exactly what caps you need and where to get them.

FYI, there was a guy on EBay that would refurbish them. Not sure if he still does. He did mine and it turned out great. I also needed to clean up the connector under the carpet near the driver's seat. The refurbished unit didn't work until that connector was cleaned up. Seems to be common. Oh, I also have a bag of those buttons for the lights. Nice firm snap. PM if you're interested.

In the second photo of the backside, on the left, is that just residual flux on the solder joint? Hard to tell in the photo. Its possible there is a cracked solder joint that isn't showing up in the photo. And reflowing it would resolve that.

But, what about it does not work? Its possible whatever issue you have is actually in the wiring, and not this module.

The rest of the board is quite clean for there to be a big blob of flux at that position. I'd guess that device is a pushbutton? Maybe somebody tried to repair it at some point?

This is a very simple board. The MTP3055s are transistors (N-channel MOSFETs) and the HCF4049 is a hex inverting buffer (line driver). S14K44 brings up a varistor, and that's what the part looks like. Temperature sensor. The little yellow jobs are tantalum electrolytic capacitors, as best I can tell. There are also some diodes and resistors. The resistor values are easy (read the colored bands) but you'd probably need a magnifying glass or to desolder the part so you could read the diode or capacitor markings.

The tantalums are the most likely failures, though transistors can fail too. What kind of display does this connect to? I'd expect there's something with a TLD or LED display connected to this. This board is not complicated enough to drive a display.

Does the TSM show test points with expected values? First thing is check that the board has power where it's supposed to.

Thats not the main circuit board. Thats just one for the overhead lights. You need the main one. With the display. Thats the one that the capacitors pop on.

The main one is in the front of the overhead console closest to the windshield.. its inside a black plastic box. Carefull taking the clips off holding it. They can break.

Looks like this

So these are pics of overhead console circuit board. The first pic, center just below display rectangle has a nasty looking component. How do I hook up power to test?

You have a bad resistor and looks like a buldging capacitor. The brown cap closer to the black square chip on the top in your picture. Looks like its raised.

I would look closer at the blown resistor to check for any damaged traces. ( traces are the light colored lines on the circuit board. They are copper lines going from one point to another)

You will need to replace that bad resistor thats all black and has gunk on it. And that capacitor i recomend replacing all the larger caps.

That blown resistor if you follow the trace goes from the pin on the purple colored object to the resistor itself then to the capacitor next to it.

And easy way to fix this is remove the resistor itself.. and solder a inline resistor from the pin where the purple thing is, and then solder the other end to the capacitor pin. This will bypass that blown resistor that essentually cut power to the cap

Image
I circle the two areas that look bad to me.

Id have to see the capacitor up close to be sure.. but that small rectangle resistor for sure is bad. The traces on zooming in luckily look good. But the board isnt working due to thst blown resistor and the buldging cap.
