Rubber vs. polyurethane body mounts?

Post by Laredo Matt »

When I start building the Cherokee back up, I need new body mounts. I'll primarily be driving on road ~90% so looking for a nice steady ride. It will be my daily driver.

Wondering if poly stiffens the ride over rubber and if so how noticable. Love to hear what others have experienced.

I prefer poly. They don’t sag over time.

You will get a bit more road noise/vibration transferred into the cabin with poly mounts. But they will last without compressing like the rubber mounts do. But its not like rubber mounts with compress over some short period of time. It may be 15 years before you notice. So, not sure it really matters.

Is there a source for rubber mounts for an 87 grand wagoneer?
1987 Grand Wagoneer daily driver with 134,000 mi running strong
on the sidelines is a 401 with an Edelbrock aluminum high rise
intake manifold and four barrel carb on standby.

Having a hard time finding rubber for the Cherokee as well. There are some universal rubber mounts and a thread on IFSJ forum about upgrading/modifying the HW mounts themselves which opens up options on rubber but I don't think I really want or need to go that route. My mounts are in great shape and I don't need to create more work. Already have more than enough to do.

I'm planning to spray in lizard skin and then go over it with DynaMat so hopefully that will deal with any noise/vibration from poly. I don't like rattles :)

If anyone knows a source for rubber, let me know otherwise i guess it will be poly.

I'm going with rubber for the ride quality. One thing about rubber mounts is that rubber is an organic compound and when it comes into contact with petroleum products, it breaks down faster. So if you have any fluid/oil leaks, thats something to keep in mind. Mostly in regards to engine and transmission mounts because they're more likely to come into contact with oil.
