Is Grille swap possible ?

Post by slowhand35 »

Hey all, new here I'm a mopar guy and working on my first jeep, 1990 grand wagoneer.
The grille on mine was an aluminum grille shell with an insert from the factory.

Looking around I see that it changed around 1986 or so, from a one piece grille to the two piece.

My question is, will the one piece bolt up on the 1990 wag if I change or modify the mounting for the one piece as in earlier models ?
Meaning, hood, fenders, etc. Are in the same location in reference to the 2 different grilles ?
Are the grille external dimensions the same between the two types ?

I'm asking because I've not been able to find the grille shell for the 1990 and have found a couple used reasonably priced, one piece earlier model grille's.
It would be temporary until I found a reasonably priced 1990 grille shell.

Any help on this is greatly appreciated.
I have some manuals already, but none have any dimensions

Thanks

The two piece was used from 80-91. The insert did change, and there was a few different designs used for both the insert, and the aluminum surround.

You can make pretty much any grill from 63-91 work on a '90. Different levels of work are required depending on which grill you go with.

What of these grills are you wanting to use:

Outstanding information Stuka.
I have a parts interchange manual for early 70's dodge cars.
Is there one for jeeps ?

I'm looking at using a grille from I'm guessing 85-86, looks like the pic attached I here.

Thank you for this, I didn't want to start driving it with the oil cooler, wiring, etc. exposed.

There's the Hollander Interchange guide that junkyards use. Nothing else AFAIK.

Suspect the aftermarket parts suppliers get their application info from there, which does not bode well for its accuracy.

It's a different world from the big three automobile makers.

The grill that is referred to as the 'Pig Nose' or 'BBQ', depending on who you ask. It was used 79-85, but was most common from 79-83. And was the only grill used in '79. And unlike the Muscle or Final Edition grills, it is one piece. Rather than a surround with a plastic insert.

I have a pig nose grill locally from a 79 cherokee chief if youre interested ? Has a bit of algae on it. But i think i can remove it.

But yes its one peice. There is a lock on it which is a weird but ill just cut that off. Never seen anyone put a keypad lock on a grill.

I have the muscle style grill on my 90

Won't say for sure what all needs modification, but when I tried swapping my pig nose out for a late model 2 piece grill I remember the main thing was the lower mounting tabs where the mounting screws go into didn't line up between the two. Likely would be easy enough to make an intermediate bracket from either sheet metal or scrap though. Much easier to do late model to pig nose though as, at least on the J trucks, an external hood release was used instead of one in the cab which gets blocked by the solid surround.

I replaced a pig-nose with a razor
I had two cut off a few tabs for clearance
so,going TO a pignose I;m sure you'd have to add some tabs

I also went with interior hood latch as the pignose latch wont work with a razor
