Normal parasitic battery draw

Post by TeaBag »

Does anybody know what a normal parasitic battery draw would be for a stock 1991 GW? My battery is only lasting about 4-5 days without starting. I am measuring between .04 to .07 amp draw at the battery. I can can decrease that by .01 amps by pulling the fuse that controls the radio. Pulled all the other fuses and don't see any additional drop.

My battery is only a couple years old.

Is .04 to .07 normal acceptable for the 1991?

If you have the radio disconnected, and the doors are all closed (dome light and such), then there should not be any draw.

But now you get the fun job of tracking it down :) Disconnect stuff until it stops. Start with big connections first to narrow it down to an area.

Yep, zero. 50 milliamps is a lot. Try disconnecting the alternator first.

Thanks. I did disconnect the ALT and it had no effect.

Thanks all. I figured it out. It was my FITECH controller. As long as it remains plugged in, it draws power. When I unplugged it, the meter went to 0.0amps.

Suggest you put it on a relay that opens when the ignition is off.

Only draw i have is from a car charger i hooked up to the battery. It would stay on 24.7 the little led light. But it never drained my battery at all. My new charger is a panel with two usb, a regular car charger port. And 5 switchs. I got this panel for my offroad lights i hooked up recently.

I have panel wired into the first switch. Just to turn the panel itself on. The rest of the switchs go into relays for the lights. So without the switch on the dash flipped on i have no power.

Maybe you should hook that thing of yours up to a switch in the dash to turn it off and on

Anything above 10 milliamps will drain your battery in a week . No more than 10 , that's like a dash clock running or radio yellow keep alive memory wire . I had a client's dodge tradesman once that had 17 milliamps drain . Dead battery after 1 week , so yeah the 50 is like having all dome lights on and the radio .BTW using a FLUKE meter or other to do this testing , do not pull on the headlamps or any high amp draw . Pops that big main fuse in the meter . Any meter will not like that if your testing milliamp draw .

A bit late to chime in here.
Verify your wiring like the one person said that the EFI must NOT be powered on when key is in OFF position, but Only when on ON-Run position.
NAPA has a real good 14V 40Amp relay to do the EFI Powering, so the trucks’ fuse box doesn’t carry the main 12V Power load.
I did this for my HEI and will the TBI when installing it.
