NP229 Noise 2wd

Post by Milktruck »

Morning!

My '88 GWagoneer has developed a chain noise, or almost gravelly metallic sound when I'm running in 2wd. The sound immediately disappears when I shift into 4wd Hi and I can run with no noise. The dash light flickers (4WD) when I'm in 2WD, but keeps a solid light in 4WD. I hoping that I can get some insight from the board here on how to diagnose the issue and get it fixed. I've checked the vacuum lines and they are good, and actually had a known good vac switch (on dash) that I've popped in. No fix.

After spending an afternoon listening and shifting back and forth in gear this looks to me to be a mis-diagnosis and is a failing catalytic converter. Too gravelly and inconsistent. Quite hard to isolate to one or the other

Great find...
a few month ago a thumping noise sounded as a failing front CV axle on the passenger side... of course not pleasant when it was replaced less than 20K miles ago... it turned out to a driver's side rear drum brakes... dam hatchbacks are quite a boombox
