Steering wheel and horn ring removal

Post by 81waggy »

Any one know how to remove the steering wheel and horn ring from a 70 wagoneer? It's the old amc non tilt column with the chrome horn ring. It's a 1414x.

Look from the bottom side of the steering wheel. Between the chrome and the plastic jeep center cap there should be a small notch. Place a screwdriver in it an carefully pry the plastic cap up (try to use a wide width one).Under that there are some phillips screws that need to be removed. There is a horn wire that should also pull off

Sorry didn't fully answer the steering wheel part.
Once the horn stuff is removed remove the nut at the center of the steering wheel, Hold the wheel so it doesn't turn as you loosen the nut. Use a wheel puller to pull the steering wheel.

Does anyone know if you can swap that 70 steering wheel onto an 81 column?

You will find some Youtube videos useful, search early/70's GM steering wheel removal. You will need a wheel removal tool and maybe a lock plate tool.
