Hello all... I have a 69 Wagoneer and my fuel tank is looking pretty rough. Anyone know where to find a replacement? I see a lot of 1970 and up replacement plastic tanks out there for Wagoneers but can’t find a 69. Anyone know the difference? Would it fit?
You looked at the 0020 tank from MTS? http://www.mtscompany.com/J-truck.htm I think this will work, with some reservations. Pretty sure that everyone that's selling this tank is selling this part, and copying the application info provided by MTS. First, do you have a skid plate? Pretty sure the plastic tanks require a skid plate to support the tank. Skid plates in these Jeeps with steel tanks were an option, and the steel tank will support itself by bolting up into the Jeep. Not so with a plastic tank.
Which engine? Jeep divides the tank applications in the parts book by a tank for the 230 and 327, and a later tank for the 232 and 350. (This is wierd because the 327 and 232 overlap in time, and you would not expect Jeep to use a different tank for the 6 vs the V8). Looks like it's more important which engine you have than the year. Likely the 350 tank will work for the 327 with some changes, but I don't know exactly what that would be. The parts book only shows one illustration for all these tanks, so I would assume that the differences are minor. MTS may know more about this - I'm sure they have had this question before.
Is there a steel tank available? If so, I think you're going to have to take a leap and buy the tank to find out what's different. MTS may be able to comment on the differences, even if you don't buy their tank.

To answer your questions...
I have no skid plate.
I have a metal tank right now
I have a Buick 350
I think you are right... might need to take a keep of faith and mock up something to fit/work. Not sure if anyone has used plastic fuel tank without a skid plate? Any pics of a plastic in a 70’s model?
“I contacted the manufactures and they said typically the pre-1970 tanks have a different filler neck and the sending unit/ fuel pickup are different.”

How rough is rough... surface rust on the outside, but check the inside first.
the plastic tank needs a skid plate, or more exactly the coffin case to support its bottom, on rough trails I suspect that the metal brackets will dig into the plastic unless you have more than a few brackets with large paddings to equalize the weight of 20gallons of gas.
The metal brackets used on the 74 are very similar to your set, a strap at the rear quarter part, another support by the pumpkin area and another bracket upfront to the frame near the TC, let me gather the picts of the 74
upon removal
the rear main bracket
fuel sender detail after derusting the outside, the inside was very acceptable, extra filter is added before the fuel pump

An olde tyme radiator shop - one that actually repairs radiators - could probably boil it out and repair it. These shops are few and far between today, but worth seeking out. Note that most "radiator shops" today do not work on radiators; instead they stock and sell commodity radiators and mostly make money on installation.
If you put your location in your profile, it will show when you post. Someone in your area might recommend a shop. I also suggest filling out your signature with year/model/equipment.
You understand that Raybucks is reselling this part made by MTS? That MTS is the manufacturer? MTS will help you, but they will likely refer you to Raybuck (one of their retailers) for the sale.
