Hey everyone,

I have currently been searching to no avail for frame-side motor mounts for a 258 in my '83 J10.

What I have found is a pair of frame-side motor mounts from a 1964 Wagoneer with a Tornado 230.

I know the 230 and 258 shared some block characteristics, but don't know much about the interchangeability of frame-side mounts for them, or if there are any frame differences between the '64 Wagoneer and my J10 which could effect compatibility.

If anyone knows whether these '64, 230 mounts would fit my '83 with a 258, it would be a great help!

You are thinking of the AMC 232 which is the same family as the 258. The 230 doesn't share anything with any other engine to my knowledge.

Did you damage the mount on yours? The mount for any 232/258 equipped FSJ will work for you. You can try giving a junkyard like J&W Jeeps a call, but you may just need one fabbed up.

226 Continental flathead inline 6 is a drop-in sub for the 230 as I recall. Otherwise I agree with Stuka. If you want the steel towers, that's a junkyard item.

232 from the J-trucks has a different deck height and mount location from the 258, as I recall. You want a part from a '71 or newer J-truck, Wagoneer or Cherokee with a 258. Extraordinarily unlikely anything else will work.

There is a '62-73 parts book online here http://oljeep.com/edge_parts_man.html - you can look up the part you need and see if it crosses to any earlier years. I expect '72-73 will be the same as your '83 in this area. There are also parts manuals for later years.

Ok, I was thinking of the amc 232. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction

I know the 232 and 258 have a different deck height, but at least in AMC cars guys swap the 232 for 258/242 without changing the frame side mounts. So if the mounts are different, its not by much.

But I did not know the 226 was the basis for the 230, good info.

My book from Dick Datson says the mounts changed to give a lower hood height when the 199-232 went to the 232-258. I'd guess that means the mount location on the block is different before and after, but I don't know for certain about the towers.

The 226 has some dimensions in common with the 230, again according to Datson. Crank dimensions are the same, something. IIRC he also says the 226 and 230 have the same bell pattern and mounts. I have seen a 226 in an early Wagoneer, as a replacement for the 230. The last two years of Utility Truck/Wagon production (1962-64) got the 230, which may have been the motivation for the 226-230 compatibility.
