steering columns

Post by sansabarJ »

Hello gentlemen

I have a 72 J4000 .I am struggling with this darn column .I had replaced a very worn shifter collar ( automatic turbo 400 ) and in 3800 miles its back to slop city .I found the plastic bushing was not inside there up between the shifter bowl and the turn signal housing , and did not know there even was one in these columns .These are unusual and unlike ALL other columns for other cars and trucks .A 1965 Rambler American is the same as the earlier trucks and wags and uses the same internal parts , that's it ,nothing else matches . I am looking for a very nice shifter bowl ,and note that they wear inside at the large groove that indexes the shift tube lug . I am also looking for the lower bushing at bottom of the column .
Anything after 72 is the not at all same as those are all typical GM .These are also not FORD .I use the GM column loosely as they are not the same as any other 60s 70s GM car or truck ( similar but not the same and share very few parts ) . I have asked KAISERMAN for help on the shifter bowl ,but thought to just see if you guys have any NOS parts for these columns .A Jeepster is also a lot different in key components .

I thank you guys for any help you can provide , even a diagram of the column parts can help a lot .

Thank you

Hello there, you may be able to find the part on some of the sites that serve the AMC/AMX crowds. I have been able to order a few small parts from them in the past that I couldn't find from other sources...a couple to check would be:
http://www.ramblerparts.com/catalog.php
http://www.americanpartsdepot.com/partscatalogpage.htm
or
https://www.amclives.com/
Hopefully they will have the parts you're searching for. You could also see if Kanter has anything https://www.kanter.com/index.aspx

UPDATE :

I found that STUDEBAKER used a very similar steering column the 63 to 73 FSJ.I have researched this in depth to find another maker that uses a steering column similar or the same as these FSJ trucks do . Studebaker has used this style of column for about 10 or 12 years in most of their vehicles . I required NOS parts for my column restoration . I bought an NOS shifter bowl collar for a 64 LARK in the box .This part is the same in all details as my 72 J4000 automatic non tilt shifter collar bowl . Check out Studebaker parts online if you require a column part . ( NOTE ) the upper components are pretty much equivalent to our trucks . Like anything ,you will want to check into this if you need a part and check the part you are after to see if it is compatible .So far the upper components can be substituted . Now , the outer and inner column housing jacket / tube is not the same as its all different at the bottom and the mounting is not at all the same . If your into custom builds .. Studebaker has some very cool steering wheels with a nice variety of horn rings .You cannot mix the horn ring with a JEEP steering wheel as there is some differences .

Happy Jeeping
