Tornado 230 Dizzy conversion

Post by Tentex »

Hey guys, this is my first post on the forum. I have a 1964 j2000 with the tornado 230 OHC 6 in it. It WAS a running truck I am currently rebuilding. I sent my distributor off to be rebuilt and the guy disappeared off the face of the earth after he received my part. Now Im stuck. I cannot find ANY source for the dizzy. I dont have the time to do an engine swap, and Ive already got a load of money in rebuilding the current drive train. Does anyone here have any experience with converting to a different distributor set up for these old engines? Or do you happen to have one laying around from your swap? any suggestions would be helpful. If I cant find a solution, ill have to just part it out to get some of my money back out of it.
TIA

Maybe this isn't too helpful, but if nothing pans out here it would be worth checking around on military vehicle forums that are still active as the M715 came with the 230. Likely some milsurp vehicle collectors that have knowledge and spare parts for the Tornado still kicking around.

Tons of conversions in that area as well, you may even be able to pick up a whole spare motor for pretty cheap.

Just a tip, i think it was Willys America . .. I sent my Tornado dizzy out and they used a dizzy body from a super hurricane with the tornado shaft and gear, installed a pertonix electonic ignition and now I've got a great electronic ignition. Inspecting it after I got it back, looks like no modifications were made to the individual parts . . . Just a combination of parts so i think anyone could do this.

This seems plausible - the 226 Super Hurricane shares many dimensions with the 230, and it seems likely that the distributor body would work for this.
