Transfer case blew up, 83 Wagoneer Quadra - Good deed costing me $$$$ oy

Post by Mickfluff »

Hope all is well... don't drive the Wagoneer many miles per year. Was introduced to someone through friend that wanted to use my Wagoneer as a get away vehicle after his wedding and agreed. (he and his new wife to be both had one years back) Then learned the wedding was a 45min ride from me... plus the same distance back (on some highway) is more then my Wagoneer gets used in a season. Anyway, wedding went great so I hear... picked up the truck and on the way home on the highway at 50mph I heard a noise.... slowed the wagoneer and it was leaking. Looked further and my transfer case blew open and a huge crack. No idea what caused this? Engine ran OK and was still able to drive it to get it off the main road.

Long story short this wedding and helping someone I don't even know ate my day having the truck towed and now a massive repair bill. Never mind the day he came to pick it up it didn't start and that costed me 180$ for a battery and someone to come by and get going as I was out of town. hahah

Anyway, looking for advice on buying a new transfer case? Its an 83 (old wrap around deco tail lamps) grand wagoneer with Quadra 4wheel drive etc. Would anyone know what this transfer box is referred to (see a few references on various ones) and thoughts/advice on where to source a new/aftermarket (if even exists?) or a quality rebuilt one?

thanks all...

If the badges said Quadra it is either a 229 or 219. There should be a tag on it with the actual model number

I am not familiar with the differences between the two. I did swap a 219 for a 208 (also available in 1983). It's a 'bolt on' swap but you do need to lengthen the rear drive shaft and it's best to convert to manual locking hubs. Only a Jeep 208 will work so be careful when looking for used ones.

You likely have a NP229 and there's billions of them. However, rebuilts are expensive, so youll want to score a running used one. If you cant find one on Ebay/Craigslist, buy a parts vehicle for $1000 for the Tcase and them sell the rest.

Being an '83 it should be a 219. The 229 didn't get Quadra-Trac badging to my knowledge. In '84 when they switched to the 229 the Quadra-Trac badging went away with it.

Being a 219, those cases are harder to find. A 229 will bolt in place of it, but I don't have the t-case length measurements on hand. I think the 229 is longer because of it having the extra drive mode. If its only a little bit different, it should be ok. But if its an inch or more, you may need to do some drive shaft work :/

The 219 went away in 82. An 83 should have a 229 with selectrac badging. Easy to identify the tcase by the tag on the back. A 219, 229, or 228 will all bolt in.

I often use Joe's reference from the 'mother board'

http://www.ifsja.org/tech/figures/db.html

He indicates the 229 was available 1981 to 1985 and again 1987 to 1992, the 219 was available 1980 to 1983. Looks like 1986 was an odd year with the 228 being the available option.

OP, I have a parts 83 with the t-case still in it. Was pulling good when parked, however, that was well over 6 years ago and the jeep has basically been gutted. I live in KY. PM me if interested and we can set up things.

Jeeze you'd think the guy would've at least paid for the battery as a matter of "good will" since you did such a nice deed. Lesson learned, huh? Years ago I let a co-worker use my mgb for a parade to advertise the service club he was a member of. An hour after the parade was over I still hadn't seen my car again, clearly they were out joyriding around. Never, ever, ever, ever again.

Pretty easy to figure out. If it's a 229 it has a dash switch to go between 2wd and 4wd.

If it's a 219 it just has the floor shifter... and has no 2wd at all.
