I finally located my reverse light switch and wiring since I built the truck, idk, like 100 years ago. Never had the reverse light switch installed (youthful inexperienced stupidity I guess), so anyways I found where I stashed it
Now. Cover off the transmission, I don't see or recall where the hell the switch goes lol 67 truck with a T18B if someone can refresh me I'd be grateful. I'm not seeing it though. Pics or never existed!
There was three styles to my knowledge. There is the one posted above.
There is one where the switch comes into the same area, but from the back (Ignore the blue square, I stole the photo from pirate):

And then there was the T98 and early T18 that didn't have a backup light switch at all.

You do not have the required permissions to view the files attached to this post.
The switch, if present, is always activated by the shift rail. I don't know of any other way to activate backup lights automatically. All the linkage is there on the top of the transmission, and there is no other communication of which gear you are in. You pretty much can't have backup light activation without something to do with the shift top. A '68ish shift top will shift into R forward and away and have the switch at the position I show in the parts book drawing. Later tops from late '78ish on shift into R away and back, but the backup lights use the same type of switch.
If you shift forward and right, the switch is activated by the rail moving backward and left. That's where the hole is.
There will be a TCS (transmission controlled spark) switch on some models that has a single post and grounds in top gear. Suspect this is blue-outlined hole shown above.
With no place to screw into on the shift top, this is quite strong evidence that your shift top pre-dates standard backup lights (pre '67 or '68?) and the switch you found has some other history. Lots of older vehicles had backup lights either added or optional, and could be operated by a dash switch.

Most likely your 4wd light indicator. The D20's that had the indicator (not all do) have a similar switch installed into the shifter area. Though as I recall, it has a single stud in the middle, not the two pole connector like the reverse light switch.
