Torque specs for front shackles?

Post by will e »

I replaced my front shackles and the test drive didn't go well. A lot of noise from the front. I can see the leaf springs twisting a bit and the shackles are making a loud clunking noise.
I have them torqued to 100 foot lbs. What's the recommend torque spec?

Loosen them with weight on the suspension, then retorque to 80 lbs. Let us know how that feels.

It's in the TSM, last page of section 2N in my '82 book. 100 initial, 80-120 in service.

Thanks Tgreese, I remembered I had a copy of the TSM and looked them up this morning.

I am wondering if the rear bushings on the front springs are bad too. Might take a quick look at those to see.

I stopped torqueing mine down to 80ftlbs. They are 9/16" lock nuts [the taper is probably worn] and I lightly seat the nut with Red thread locker. Ive never had one come loose and the fastener is robust enough that the thread locker wont strip the threads on removal.

Hm. My TSM says 35-40 lbs - for a '71. Is it really that big of a difference between '71 and '82?

Aren't the rears of a '71 post mount? That could be significantly different.
