I picked up a 2006 AAM 11.5" rear with a Gear Limited Slip. It's a beast!! It is 4" wider than the Dana 60 but the spring pads are in the Exact correct position. What's the Chances of that?! I've got to cut and move the shock mounts, plumb the brakes, modify the drive shaft and get 4" U
bolts/Plate.
Damn, then thats a good score! I'm surprised it's a direct bolt in. Did you snag the u-bolt plates with it? Usually oem ones are pretty beef. Is it a 2.5 spring or a 3" though?
I have the AAM 11.5 mounted under the J20. The springs on the J20 were 1/2" wider. So, I slotted the lift blocks 1/4" on each side to get them to line-up. Plumbing the brakes now. I also found a set of AAM hubs with extra offset [benefits of salvaging parts for FF Ford 9" axles] that will narrow the axle 2". I believe I only need to bolt on the hubs with the narrow disc rotors. That will put the AAM at 70" vs the J20 Dana 60 of 69".
No pictures yet--Ill post a video on YouTube. I have the brakes plumbed, unit mounted but Im traveling out of town for 3 weeks. It'll be waiting on me when I return.
Wrapping up the AAM 11.5 installation. I had to move the spring pads that 1/4" because the larger spring plates would hit the frame on compression--GRRR. However, the shocks, pads and brakes are all in place.. No more Fab needed just waiting on the modified drive shaft to get finished.
The drive shaft took two trys to get it correct. The shop eye-balled the AAM yoke and then installed a 1480 Ujoint on my drive shaft. However, it needed a 1410. So, the 2nd try worked and now Im driving it!! I was going to do a Posi-burn out video but my Tired 360 cant spin the 35x12.50 tires on concrete--even with soap and bleach. So SAD
My Summit order arrived with the Trans Temp gauge, deep transmission pan and TF2 shift kit. I needed to reseal the pan because it leaks anyways and I wanted snappier shifts. So, all this will be on my next video. Also, I have a TCI Saturday Night Special on back order. Cant wait to see how the 1800/2000 stall helps or hurts towing/performance. I already have a large Aux cooler in place and anytime Im over 45 mph Ill be at stall. So, I dont expect temperature to be an issue.
Well, the TF2/race shift kit has a lot of steps. I found with the TF1 entry level shift kit that there was little shift improvement. It did provide little drain-back of fluid [long delay to engage reverse after sitting] and the ability to Down Shift but not much else. The TF2 is a Race shift kit with the ability to shift into 1st at any speed , firm shifts etc. However, the last item on the list requires modifying the LR piston. That requires removing the tail housing--Grrrr. I had to leave for a work assignment and hope that the back ordered Torque converter will be there when I return. That way, Ill pull the whole trans and finish the Shift Kit when I install the Converter.
