Wagooner 1965 's rebuild

Post by tara »

hi guys,

we are beginning the engine rebuild with my mechanic. looks like parts are not so bad. inside it was a huge mess water, grease every thing looking like mud. gonna install new piston rings, new timig chain and gears, new water pump, top end will be check valve seats and straightness. all seals and gaskets changed of course.

Wagooner 1965 's rebuild

Post by 44bz »

Nice progress! My 327 was similar when I opened it up - dirty, greasy, and full of sludge. Make sure your mechanic pays attention to the rocker shaft bolts. Two of them are hollow and need to be first in line (rear of the engine). That's how the rockers get oil, it's pushed up through the hollow bolts.

no worries thanks

by the way is it normal that there is only one baffle above the valve tappet oil chamber ???? it is located on the side of the firewall

Yes, just the baffle over the back half-ish.

hi guys,

finally, engine fired today after rebuild, it sounds quite nice. but now i have to deal with other issues : i have to change the radiator which seems clogged. i have look at all the dealers, and cannot find my year.
another issue is that the breather tube has a leak at its base, i saw this morning some light oil at the base, and i was able to turn it. how can i fix that ?
any suggestions ?

thanks

I don't think you can buy one new anymore. Somebody on ifsja.org had a late 70s straight 6 radiator in front of their 327 that fit almost exact I think. Otherwise, take some measurements and find a match or have a rad shop freshen it up, that's what I did.

What breather tube are you talking about? The pcv, the oil fill? I'm not sure what you're referring to.

My spare tappet cover spins too. I'm not sure if there is a fix for that. I haven't looked into it.

The aluminum tag on the alt bracket is the engine ID. As far as the broken tab on the crossover pipe I don't know if it can be repaired since its cast? I think there are a couple used ones on eBay right now or ask on the amc forum maybe. Good to have a spare anyway.

hi guys,

i have never talk about this issue, but when the starter engage and turn the engine for just a second, and then the engine fires, leaving the starter motor doing a kind of odd noise like a dog screaming (lol).
any idea ?

thanks

The starter issue sounds like the solenoid is hanging. Get a new solenoid and it should be fine.

That's the gear reduction starter. The original is a prestolite. It's kind of bullet shaped and weighs a ton.https://www.google.com/imgres?imgurl=ht ... mrc&uact=8
