We made it back. But it was quite a long day fraught with issues. More later.

Great pictures, I wish I was able to come! I can't wait to see more. (and hear about what issues you ran into Shimniok)

Did the Cherokee make it up potato salad hill? It looks very different from when I was there 4 years ago.

Nikkormat made it 3/4 of the way up, then I tugged him the rest of the way. The honcho walked right up!

I've made it as far as grand junction. Left Moab at 12:30.

The Gasoline in my tank is boiling, even driving without a gas cap the engine either floods or stalls. And when it runs right gas burps out of the filler neck.

Anyone know a trick to raise the boiling point of winter gas?

Increased pressure is the only thing I can think of. Electric pump?

Where are you getting winter gas, or more to the point, are you sure the boiling gas isn't due to another cause?

Flooding? Maybe running way rich due to altitude? Of course higher fuel pressure means effectively richer mix. Hmm.

Could set float lower by a teeny bit to attempt to lean out.

Not sure if you are writing from the side of the road or town so not sure what options are practical.

Let us know if you are in a bind.

My truck was surging badly up the passes yesterday. (the pump was getting intermittent power) And I have had distributor pickup issues cause stalling up that grade, long ago. So I know how much it sucks to limp up to the tunnel. :/

In case anyone was curious... Here is what happened to us (me, Violet, and Scott and his family)

Just across the border the weird faint ticking noise was silenced after a BANG! And I spent a few hundred ms thinking it was a tire but it wasn't and I saw the air pump pulley bouncing off the highway in the rear view mirror. Stopped to cut and pull belt. Continued on.

Not that much farther on, Scott pulls over and I then realize that weird smell is from my truck, not his, when I see the huge smoke cloud behind me. Hood is cool, no engine fire. Open hood and trace to PS pump. Pressure hose has somehow worked loose and is finger tight. Fix. Fill. Back on road.

Then as we get nearer to Eisenhower, the truck starts surging. Fuel pump has no power I pull off three separate times. First to swap relays. Seemed to fix it. Nope. Next stop along I70 replace really hot ecm. Maybe fixed? Nope. Third time to give up. We unload super chief and load troubled child. Violet and I proceed, hopeful. The stops have cost a lot of time.

Right at the tunnel I see the oil pressure rather quickly plummet to 0. I call Scott, I idle down I70 in case oil is gone, then motor stalls. When we stop, engine won't turn over and I am freaking out fearing it is siezed. Try different battery. Check codes. Eventually it starts normally but with brief rattle, and oil pressure is back to 40.

I proceed, trying to keep to <60mph, after Violet transfers to Scott's pickup. We make it to c470, then 285, all ok then pressure gradually drops as I wait for an exit. I pull over and pressure is single digits and top end is rattling. Argh! Freaking out again. We leave super chief parked, drop people and my Jeep off and Scott and I go back and load super chief; it starts normally and pressure goes back up.

The drive is supposed to be about 6 hours. We left around noon and arrived at Scott's house at 8 I think. We got his Jeep loaded by back by 9.

Huge thanks to Scott, Denise, and Brandon for helping in so many ways, putting up with my breakdowns, and so on. I am worried and feeling pretty bad about Scott's 5.3 and hoping it will be ok :(

Sigh. It was a great trip and we had a blast with you all. Thanks for the rear end help too...

I just wished the return trip was a lot less action packed.

I thought you were running TBI.
