GM EFI fuel system options.

Post by Iroc313 »

Has anyone tried using the factory tank with an internal pump? Or an aftermarket tank in the factory location?

I'm curious if anyone has used an OEM in-tank pump in the stock tank as well.

The oem fuel pumps won't work in our tanks. The opening is different as is the depth.

Yes, stock '88 Jeep GW poly tank and stock GM TBI pump.
Earlier sending unit ~'85 for added room and modified with 3/8" pickup line vs. stock 5/16"...
This is in my '88 and has been for many years now.

Is there a difference between the 80 and 88 tank?

Also, how low can you run your tank?

I was looking at tanks Inc who has some universal saddle tanks which may work, and they're pretty much plug and play as far as that goes. My only concern is that they don't sell any poly tanks, just metal ones. I know there's a reason it was designed with a poly tank.

BabyWag,

What was the cost of doing this conversion? I have an external pump that seems to struggle when the fuel tank gets low.

Tank should be same '80-up for wag/cherokee/grand wag.

I can run it to less than a gallon left in tank.

Cost..
New fuel pump and strainer ~$25.
New sending unit was ~$30.
If you don't have wiring, connectors, fuel line, etc. Add $ accordingly
Not a simple drop in and go though, some effort required, but nothing terribly difficult.

I should correct my above comment, I had the steel coffin tanks and the tank in my J10 in my head. Both of which are very different from the 80+ waggy tanks.

So, let me get this straight. You changed the feed line of the sender to 3/8"(originally 5/16") and grafted the TBI pump to the sender. Thinking I might try something similar with the Vortec pump out of a 96 truck. I wonder if the drive shaft will clear the tank with a NP208c to 14FF..... Simplify my fuel system....

Yes, Stock sender 5/16" supply & 1/4" return.
Removed 1/4" return and replaced with 3/8", left stock 5/16" supply for return.

Pretty easy, and been working fine.

I think I'm going to end up going babywags route.

Any idea where I can find a new 80+ poly tank?

I've got one. Toying with the idea of trying it. What's your location, Iroc?

I'm thinking I'm going to use an xj tank, pump, sender- anyone ever go that route? I'm probably going to go with AFI its looking like, as 87-91 chevy's are - and I know this sounds weird - scarce in the junkyards around me. If I accumulate enough money before accumulate enough parts I'll just buy a new system.

Hydramat is neat, but not very cost effective..... The baby one costs as much as a new baffled tank.....

My main concern was that I wanted a bucket, I hated not being able to run my camaro and regal to below a quarter tank.

This will make that much less of a concern.
