The PCM/ECU is getting sent out today to get re-worked.



When it comes back, it’s game on.

I looked back and maybe I missed it, but what engine was in this Super when you got it?

It had the 327 Vigilante at one point, but it was long gone. I like the idea of the 5.3 going into it as that’s what they call the 327 these days, but of course, Chevy, not Rambler.

Oh yeah, got it. I've not had a 327-Rambler-equipped FSJ but once in a while I see them in wooden boats at vintage boat shows.

It would be kind of cool to have a 327 powered Wag towing a 327 powered wooden boat. Too bad Jeep didn't have bill board wood grain on the 327 rigs like the later Wagoneer Limited/Grand Wagoneer. That would make a nice sight!

That would be cool. Lake Coeur d’Alene, Idaho has a wooded boat show every year, most of the boats don’t show off their engines, but every once in awhile one will show off their 327. One boater pulls his wooden boat with a woodie wagon.

Wait a second - I missed that this 77 body was now part of the plan. Is the 77 body being used as is or something else? That color looks similar - maybe a little darker - to that 65(?) Wag you had for a while that received the steel wheels and Firestones.

Haha, I tired to go under the radar. I wasn’t sure I could even complete this build after surgery. As a result, this “final” build has had more twist and turns than a dime store novel.

I bought a Super Wagoneer basket case from Cali. It is the lowest production numbered Super wagoneer I’ve ever heard of, or seen evidence of. My intent was to build that super as a manual using a body swap with a less hammered body. This is where the 70’s era wagoneer came into play.
I’m tearing down the “new” Wag to see what is there for rust and damage, but now I’m not sure if I want to have two Supers. Sad, but true.
So while I take my time tearing down the Wag, I have time to think out all of my build options. A change of plans, as usual, might be in the works.

Speaking of problems, hardest problem is done.









The rear doors hit the factory strike plate without adjustment, but I did have to take out the factory shims.

It’s tack-welded in place and this is it for the weekend.

Vacation time.





I’ll get it sanded down by the end of the weekend- and once I get more wire for the welder, I’ll button up the floor.

Haha, yep. I don’t want to cut into the roof line until the windshield is out, and the rest of the back in welded up- I don’t want to tweak any of the body alignment, haha.

Haha, I’ve been mulling it over for awhile. When the truck came up along, and with the Wagoneer body from a friend, it kinda seemed like it was meant to be- then I was able to get another Thriftside bed for parts, so I figured if that’s the hand life dealt me, I had better play it.

Any thought to adding a little more length to the back of the cab so the people in the back have a lil room? Kinda like the mega cab(?) Dodge does?

I did mull that over & over & over, then opted to take the standard quad cab route. When I drew up the plans, the additional 3+ inches needed to allow more room just did not look right to me aesthetically. Almost every new truck around here is some type of 4 door- so much so that seeing a standard cab is a bit startling.
The best looking trucks seem to have a set ratio between the length of the front vs rear doors, and that includes additional space in the back to move the rear seats back for leg room. Yeah, that’s all opinion-based and subjective, but these trucks are works of art IMHO.
Having the 01 Chevy LT Z71 quad cab sitting in my shop for so long gave me plenty of opportunity to sit in the back and based upon those internal cab measurements, the Jeep quad cab is roughly 2” longer than that.

Ultimately, though, I think a lot of leg room will be based upon picking the right rear seating options to get the leg room-cab length ratio dialed in. I have more than a few seat mods under my belt, so getting the right set doesn’t scare me.

I plan on using the Chevy’s stock folding rear seat, I’d section 2-4” from the front edge of that seat in order to obtain more leg room, BUT the 3rd row seats in my wife’s Escalade also seem to draw my attention (not that I would take hers!) due to the size.

In my perfect world I would use two stock bench seats from a j truck with factory stitching, but the rear seat would have quite a bit of metal sectioned out of the upper rear back rear of the seat, that would give me about 3-4 inches to push it back against the rear wall more, but those seats are a bit uncomfortable in the long run.

I've gotten over my initial surprise and can now ask regular, sensible questions! Are you using an FSJ frame or the Chevy?
