Electrical diagrams and isolated circuits idea

Post by Tatsadasayago »

After chasing wiring gremlins in my Jeep yesterday and getting frustrated trying to follow the proper wire on the diagrams, I had an idea:

Wouldn't it be nice to have a color coded diagram? Wouldn't it be cool to have a diagram showing only the wiring, plugs, splices and devices that are pertinent to your current project?

Image
So, this morning I brought the wiring schematics for my 77 into photoshop and added the proper colored lines to the instrument cluster so I could easily identify the wires. I then had the idea of removing all other wiring etc from the diagram for each major system such as starting, charging, lighting etc. and providing these as standalone schematics without the background clutter.

Having said this, would any of you be interested in having a set for your FSJ?
I'll finish the diagrams for the 77 (Since I own one) then entertain the possibility of adding other years as requested.
Perhaps Stuka might be willing to host the images here on the site so they will be available to all in the event my server goes down.

Your thoughts?

What an excellent idea.

Do the diagrams change much between 77 and 79 for the chief?

I'm sure there are a few differences. I'll compare when I get to that point.

That's a great idea. I did something similar with the paper drawings for my 73 Mustang but used highlighter and white out. (Does anyone remember white out). haha
My wiring is a mess, most of it my fault. I need to clean it up.

One thing I hate is the wire color available at the local parts store is limited. I sure would like to source some multi-color wiring to use on some of the accessories I have added.

I think I will attempt what you are doing in my spare time. Then when I am done I will print and laminate the diagrams (along with my additions) and keep a set in the jeep.

Very nice touch, I did the same for the civic vacuum diagram, the FSJ is a piece of cake compared to carb civic.

here we go

As for differences, not too many in the 70's.

Thanks for the feedback.
I've been working on the instrument cluster diagram today and will have something ready in a few hours.
Besides printer friendly paper sheets, I'm pondering making a whole vehicle web app that allows one to select the system, circuit or device by menu buttons, including embedded photos showing locations for each. Neat and tidy schematics can be confusing when faced with a 'bundle of snakes' wiring harness...

More later.

After reading black and white schematics for years, colored schematics bother me. They are actually hard to read for me.

2007 Mercury Milan, 2.3L, 5-speed, now my DD. 29 mpg average.
