Easiest distributor gear removal method?

Post by Nikkormat »

Whats the easiest way to remove the roll pin on the dizzy gear in the field? For example in a junkyard. A punch? If so what size? Any easier ways?

Why would you want a used distributor gear? You can buy them new.

But in answer to your questions, yes, a punch is the best way (obviously with a hammer, too).

Any ideas on the diameter? I don't have a distributpr handy right now. Maybe I'll make the builder buy a new set since I'm already pulling three used timing covers for him.

If you already have the motor apart, buy a new cam and distributor gear.

The new sets have too many well documented issues (misground, brittle alloy, incorrect oiling, ect...) For me to justify spending $100+ (that I don't have) for a set.

Especially if I can get an OE set that have worked for 40 thousand miles trouble free for a buck and a half at a pull yard. That's an especially good deal when I'm pulling the timing cover any way. I got my hands on a real nice 40 thousand mile timing cover to. No water pump gouges and the oil pump is as smooth as new.

Used timing parts are fine. But they have to be used in sets because they wear together into a pattern. That's the only caveat of used.

For future reference to anyone wondering the same thing that I was... An 1/8th inch pin punch works fantasticaly for removing the pin.
