steering column for manual transmission

Post by ross80truck »

I am converting my Wagoneer to a manual transmission. I have a steering column out of a Cherokee that had a manual transmission, but it does not have tilt. Were there any FSJs with a manual transmission and tilt steering? If not, I believe I heard that GM steering columns of a similar year are the same. Can anyone confirm this?

I've been looking too ross80. Tilt with a manual trans was definitely a rare bird as I've only seen two that I can recall.

I'm going to scrounge around at J&W's warehouse in an attempt to put together a column with the non-tilt sleeve parts soon and if I am successful, I'll share the info with you here.

You could use the column out of an XJ, millions of them out there. They were all floor shifter and lots of them were tilt.

Tilt steering was never available as a standard item on manual trans FSJ's. It was only optional, and a more rare option at that. I have never been able to find one.

That's what the '83 Honcho had with 4 speed. I swapped it to the guy I sold the 360/4 speed for his auto tilt column.

If you get an XJ, get a '94 or earlier - after that they added airbags.

There are tons of XJ's getting parted out - I just located one I'm trying to get from a guy right now in NC.

Are you going 3-spd column shift or 4+ floor shift?
I put a '77 Firebird tilt-er in my 4-spd by only changing the firewall plate. Other GMs of that era might work. The wiring connector on the column fit my truck exactly, and my key cylinder went right in; but I had to use my lock ring to make my wheel line up correctly.
If you're going 3-spd, I don't know of one.
