One and all,
I just received a new HEI distributor for an AMC V8 from Matt at Bulltear. I have a couple of questions. It doesn't appear Matt is around today so I figured I would start here. For anyone who has purchased an HEI dizzy from Bulltear here are my questions,
1. Did it or is it supposed to come with a thrust washer to install between the original dizzy gear and the dizzy housing? Mine did not come with one. Now his dizzys don't come with a gear since they should be matched. I am already running a matched set from Bulltear.
2. Did the roll pin just slide right through the dizzy shaft? My roll pin is tight going through my gear, tight going through my former Z&M Jeeps HEI, and tight going through an older DUI HEI dizzy, but it slides right through the Bulltear dizzy shaft. The hole is clearly much larger.
Stuck at the moment.

Soo do you have a Bulltear HEI? Did you just drill your dizzy gear? If that is the case, this is going back and I am finding another one. My Z&M Jeeps HEI didn't need this. Seems silly to sell a dizzy that needs to have the gear drilled (that he sells too). Looks like she doesn't run this weekend and I get to sit until Monday and chat with Matt.
Anyone else running a Bulltear HEI?

I have used Z&M HEI's, but never a bulltear, so I cannot comment on your questions. But it would seem strange to need to drill out your gear. Because that means their own gear doesn't fit their own HEI?
I run the BullTear timing set, gears and distributor and used the same roll-pin. I suspect you got a shaft that was drilled too large. Sucks to lose a weekend over things like this

I didn't know Bulltear had an HEI. I have experience with ZM Jeep and BJs Offroad units. The ZM came drilled and fit original pin. The BJs units needed to be drilled. All 3 came with shims. I had a machine shop measure specs with shims, drill the shafts and install gears. Good luck Kevin.
One and all,
talked with Matt @Bulltear this morning. Looks like a bad batch of dizzys as all the ones in stock are drilled .010" oversized. I am in a bind and found a smokin deal on a DUI dizzy. Will be here Wednesday. The Bulltear dizzy was a very nice looking distributor. Quality stuff. Once the roll-pin bore size gets straightened out, I would consider them again. If I didn't need the jeep running so soon, I would wait for it.

Kevin, please let us (or at least me) know if your DUI unit comes with a thrust washer.
I got a smoking deal on mine also but it did not come with anything.
It looks very well built, there's also a very interesting history behind that company.

Tad,
got the DUI dizzy. There is a thrust washer on this new unit. My brother Nick has run his DUI for at least 10 years now. Trouble free. I will let ya all know if there are any issues with install.

Please measure the thickness of the thrust washer Kevin.
Thanks,
Tad

Did it come with a gear installed Kevin? I recall the guy that set ours up said that thrust washer should be about .010" - .015". He is very familiar with AMC V8s.
Tad,
dangit, already stabbed it in this morning. I simply took the gear off, installed my original gear, and set it in.
Flint, it did come with a gear but I didn't use it. I actually used a slightly thicker thrust washer that I had since the one included with the dizzy allowed the shaft to rise a little too high up that allowed the magnetic trigger to climb up a little too much. According to most manufacturers, the end result should be .020" clearance between the gear and the thrust washer. I ended with .022"

Also,
I ended up cutting in a second 'key' slot in the dizzy body to clock the cap 90-degrees counter clockwise. The DUI dizzyz sit the cap nearly 1.5" lower down than my previous Z&M jeeps one. Now the vac advance points just forward of the powersteering pump and the plug box on the cap points back at the motor between the driver's side valve cover and the thermostat housing.

I think its for the Cherokee?
Correct and Caddy came HEI stock.
We have a 360 in Cherk68 now and a 401 showing up in two weeks.
I picked up a DUI unit for $150 as I didn't want to deal with either the '74 or '78 ignition systems.
I should probably update that thread.
