York or Sanden?

Post by FSJ Guy »

Just like the title says, should I use my existing York or go with a new Sanden compressor?

I have the factory Sanden mount and even have a Sanden compressor with the existing fittings to swap over to a new compressor. Either way, I would be using 134a.

Which compressor would you use? TIA!

I won't need OBA. I have used a York for OBA in the past and it has worked well.

I ordered a reman'd Sanden compressor from Advance Auto Parts (now part of Carquest!) today. It said "without fittings", whatever that means. No worries, as I have a used junkyard Sanden in the garage to swipe any needed fittings from.

It should arrive Tuesday. I don't think I'll have A/C before the Meet n Greet in Denver on the 5th, but that's OK. That's what the ice cream's for, right?

Compressor arrived today! I'm dropping the truck off at the shop for A/C service on Monday. I tried to help them out and swap the fittings ahead of time. But they are on SUPER TIGHT. Holy cow.... I guess I'll let them mess with it. :- /

Apparently, the fittings on the compressors ARE NOT the same. At least, not on the compressor that I received. :-/

They both appear to be o-ring fittings, but the fittings that are connected to the hoses are too large for the fittings on the rear of the Sanden. Anyone run into this problem before? Can I get adapters from the hardware store? If so, is it simply an o-ring fitting or is it called something else?

Or did I get the wrong compressor? <shrug>

Thanks!

Hmmm.. Answering my own posts again.... LOL!

It looks like they ordered an SD 508 and I really need an SD 709. Unfortunately, the 709 is about $350 vs. the $210 for the 508. :- /

Anyone who has switched, what model do you have?

I just did this, and this is the compressor I ordered. The seller was excellent. Able to get them on the phone easily. They were courteous and knowledgeable.
The compressor is a brand new, not rebuilt sanden 709. Shiney. I am very pleased with it. Shipping was really quick. 2 days. Good luck!

Looks like I need the 709. I actually HAVE a used 709. It was sitting in someones backyard junk pile with other FSJ parts and I snagged it.

Can it be used after a good clean/flush?

I fiddled around with the 709 compressor and it turns without a whole lot of binding or crunching noises. That's good, right? : D

I dropped off the Jeep to have it installed and the system charged. They're also replacing the drier while it's being serviced.

I got a call today and my tech said that the high side pressures were going up to 500 psi due to a non-functioning fan clutch. I never had overheating issues before, but I guess the A/C load was too much and it is not pulling enough air across the condenser. A new fan clutch is on the way and I will bring him a factory fan shroud to install.

The pressure switch in the A/C system has been bypassed. Could that be part of the issue? I always thought it was a LOW pressure switch, but my mechanic said it is actually on the high pressure side. Any ideas?

Not the switch. The pressure is high because the freon is not being cooled. The low pressure switch is in fact in the high pressure side. If it gets below a set pressure it shuts off I think it's about 100 lbs is cut off. That is not running pressure.

Thanks for the info.

I found a Hayden Heavy Duty fan clutch (#2747) that I think will work. With the Severe Duty clutch no longer available with the slotted holes, I guess a Heavy Duty clutch is the only bolt-on upgrade from the Standard Duty clutch that they offer.

The Heavy Duty clutches spin at 70-90% of Engine RPM vs the Severe Duty clutches which spin at 80-90% of engine RPM. Standard Duty is only 60-70% of engine RPM. Hopefully that will make a difference as well.

Latest and greatest update: With the new Heavy Duty fan clutch and OEM fan shroud, it cools down to 40F in the front and 50F in the rear and high side pressures are back to normal (~200-250 psi, I think is what he said)

But.... the used Sanden 709 compressor is leaking. I ordered a new one (hopefully) off ebay and it will be here on Wednesday. With any luck, I'll have working A/C by the weekend.
