Damn you people and your post-73 frames! What options do early trucks have for a hitch?

66, any advice on what jaber said? I need a bolt on hitch for my 67 truck. I know you can get a universal RV/service body weld together one that eorks but id rather just bolt and go if possible. An 07 K2500 Gm measures fairly close if i recall

On my 66, I welded up a stout bumper with a class 3 receiver hitch, but the female end only. It’s mounted to the frame in three spots- center, and the two most outer edges.

The “easiest” way is to find an after market version- like the Grand Cherokee, or even newer Chevy’s, then cut the welds on the outer edge and slide those edges in to where they’ll fit the Jeep frame you’re working with.

Newer chevys are roughly 43” outside frame to outside frame, Waggie (60’s era anyway) are 38” outside edge to outside edge and 60’s era trucks are about 45.5” outside edge to outside edge. So the Chevy (I mocked up an 01 hitch to a 65 Jeep truck) will fit within the specs of a Jeep truck frame without too much effort BUT Chevy mounts to the bottom side of the frame and I would really reinforce the Jeep frame on that mod.

Cut down Grand Cherokee receiver hitches work on older Waggies- I did that on my old Panel Delivery wagoneer. IIRC, it mounted on the side of the frame.

All in all, there isn’t much bolt on stuff for the older FSJ crowd. If someone has a Grand Waggie rear frame measurement, I would think it would be pretty close to the older Jeep frame width, so a hitch meant for the newer wags would work with minor mods on older jeeps, too?

Chevy stuff is a dime a dozen, though, and Grand Waggie stuff costs quite a bit more coin.

Edit:

Screen shot’d pics from my photobucket account- Grand Cherokee Hitch Mod for a 1963 Wagoneer Panel Delivery:

I have a Zj and a wagoneer.. and two ZJ hitchs and a wagoneer hitch... The ZJ frames are 1.2 inch further apart. Also ZJ frames in the rear are flat and straight.. wagoneer frames curve up so a zj hitch would also have like an inch gap where the last bolt goes..

A ZJ hitch wont work unless you cut it in half and add 1.2 inch of 3.16th steel to it.. And tbh i wouldnt trust the hitch after that.

The wagoneer hitch i have is an older drawtight i believe where you have to drill mounting holes in the frame.. Its cut and welded up at an angle on the ends to be flush with the frame..
