12/7 Florence run. Drew's first Box Canyon Run!

Post by will e »

Time to take Drew's rig through Box Canyon!

Saturday Dec 27th. Meet at Cottonwood Road just off of 79 at 10am, we will try to roll out by about 20 after:

https://maps.google.com/maps?q=florence ... a&t=h&z=19

This is about 10 miles or so North of Price road. If you are coming from the North down 79 (traveling South) it is past the first set of railroad tracks. There is a flag pole visable from the road, usually there is no flag on it.

We will head up cottonwood, make a quick stop at the petroglyphs and then run up lower Ajax. We can stop for lunch either at the falls or by the play hills and then head out box canyon and come out price road. Probably take about 5 or so hours depending on traffic, getting stuck and breaking down...

I am not going to post this on AZVJC just yet. I want to keep the group a little on the small side to help make sure it moves along.

1. WILL E
2. Drew and family
3. Josh and ??
4. Tad and Em.
5.Rstep
6. Jerry

Coming out on Price Rd?
What time at Cottonwood Canyon Rd?

Em will be back from Prescott in a few hours, I'll see if she wants to ride along.

Edit:
This is just a day run?

Mike, Quick question:

Are we going in off of 60 and Mineral Mt. Rd.?
That's the only flag pole I recall (it's been awhile) right after you turn south off of 60.

Or are we going in off of 79 and Cottonwood Canyon Rd.?
I don't remember a flagpole there.
It does go to Mineral Mt. Rd, that I do remember.

The flag pole parking lot is several miles north of price. It is just off 79 and next to cottonwood. You can see the flag pole from the road.

Must be by the National Guard base there.
You need a state land trust permit to go in that way as I recall.
Mine is expired, we'll run it any way.

I took a look on the Google sat map. It is Cottonwood road. There is big parking lot there. The National Guard is a little farther south. I don't think we will be going though trust land. The AZVJC club never mentions to bring your permits and they are pretty good about that stuff.

I remember doing a lot of those trails back in '98-2000 when I lived in the 'valley'.

I had an '80 CJ5 on waggy D44's, 35's, 350/th350/d300. Good times.

Yeah, Florence is a great wheel'n area. Lower Ajax has some fun stuff on it with most of it easily bypassed. Box canyon is, well, Box Canyon. Not technically challenging but a really cool run through the canyon. It is one of my favories. Box seems to be one of the first runs we take our 'new' FSJ's on. It was the first for WILL AE on stock spings and tires:

Tom and I were brand new to wheel'n. We got WILL E through with no body damage and just a crushed exhaust pipe. I ordered my 4" Rusty lift shortly after that...

Here is a group shot from my 'original run'

Cool Bob!

Wow, we might have 4 FSJ on the same trail run! It's been a while! (The Thanksgiving meet did have a lot of FSJ but we didn't actually go on a 'run')

This should be a lot of fun with some good friends!

I need a new cover photo for Facebook. I think four fsj's would look nice. My kids have had the spotlight long enough ;)

I am going out today and blow the dust off the 77 Cher to see if it ready for a run.
It has been awhile. Had to work on the tranny yesterday. So my plan is to be there,
if FIVE FSJ is not too many :D
