Full Size Jeep Network

This is FSJ build #2. The first was a 79 Cherokee Chief with a Cummins 5.9, 5 speed with modern ford dana 60 and sterling 10.5.

After rolling it and pulling the parts I crushed it. Last year I came across a 77 Wagoneer with a 401. Didn't run so got it pretty cheap. Got it running and drove it for a while. Although it was a factory 401, the engine was replaced in 1998 so it's not the original.

I've had a 2004 LQ4 in my garage for some time and rebuilt it 020 over last winter. A CFSJC member and his wife help remove the 401 a couple weeks ago. Been busy the last couple weeks trying to get some of the heavy lifting done before I have surgery in late November. This will be a mild project. Nothing special.

Ford NP205
Dana 60 front
Sterling 10.5 rear

Ford NP205. My son helping my clean it for a rebuild. Will be adapting to a th400 with a custom adapter.












Flange and yoke saved from the cummins build. 1350 flange and 1410 rear yoke:

Saved the hydro boost and MC from the cummins Chief. They match the calipers for the brakes. Also worked great last time.

Scored a fuse box and full body harness from LS1 tech. $50. Total ship weight was 36lbs. Can't buy that much wire for near $50.

Plan is to rewire as much as possible and ditch the stock old fuse box.





Will need to rework the box as it has jumpers all over internally. I've taken it apart and removed all the jumpers. Not sure what the plan is yet. Can mess with after my surgery.

Didn't get any pics of the engine, tranny, and transfer case before I set it.

The TC is completely rebuilt with all new bearings and seals. I debated the twin stick mod but decided I didn't need it. Never really used it on my buggy.

The tranny is a th400 built with a 4l80e direct drum and better sprag. Also has a transgo 2 shift kit. Should be good for 600hp.

I rebuilt the engine last winter. Put the stronger LS2 rods with arp bolts. Head studs and LS3 springs. Have a LS9 cam. Plan on a turbo in the near future.

Worked on the mounts today. Didn't get too far. My foot has been killing my. Looking forward to my surgery.










Have the tranny/TC mount made. Paint is drying. Will install tomorrow.

Not too quick. We pulled the 401 on October 5th. Been working almost every evening. Once I have surgery on my foot I will be off it for 6-8 weeks then limited lifting. Trying to get the heavy stuff done.


That console is big. It's nice though. Came with the jeep. One of those Smittybuilt boxes.

I dig the interior.

Finished all the mounts today. Everything is all bolted up. Need to put the accessories on and dress the engine.

Bad pic of the adapter I made. Made out of 3/8" cold rolled on the th400 side. 5"x3/8" wall DOM. Then 1" cold rolled plate on the 205 side. Had to make this one 1" to clear the DOM from the bearing retainer on the 205. Also put som ribs perpendicular to the DOM to add some strength. Total adapter length is 5.875".

Pretty easy to make adapters. Just make sure everything is squared up and true. I'll never buy another adapter.

205 side mount. Did not put one on my cummins build. The torque would rock it pretty bad and hit the floor. Decided to fab one up. It's hard to see in this pic. Took advantage of the old fuel tank front mount. Also had to cut the floor since the original was passenger drop.

It's looking good man! Wish I could say we have been as productive with the 401, it's sitting in the garage floor right where we unloaded it!

Put the front clip back on today. Wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. Removing the front tires helped. Other than that, haven't done much.

Will start dressing the engine to get it sealed up.
