I saw a Rebel Machine for sale about 5 years ago in a small car lot on Lomas blvd. in Albuquerque. It was really rough but it appeared to have most, if not all, of its original badges. I was told it had the 390 in it but I didn't check that out. It did have a Hurst 4 spd. shifter in it. Black interior, still had some red and blue on the hood. Guy said $1700.00, I already had too many projects, but I let that one get away. AMC made some pretty ugly cars, but they also made some really beautiful cars too, that was one of them.

Rebel Machines are my favorite AMC muscle cars. A 1966 or 1967 Marlin comes close, and a 390 or 401 Ambassador is also nice, but the Machine is pure muscle. They look mean, they are mean. The 390 was a special version that was good for even more power than the normal 390 in something like A Javelin. 340 horsepower vs. 315, I think it was.

A neighbor used to have a 390 4 spd. AMX, mint condition with some mods to the engine. I loved that car until he got drunk and plowed it into my '68 Wag. which was parked on the street at the time, totaled them both. Remember the early Matadors? Not the uglified fat-fendered ones, but those that looked a lot like the '69 mopar C-bodies, I'd love to have one of those in a 2 dr.

I liked the early Matador better than the later. It is the same body as the 70 Rebel.

LOL Matt! I used to be a Nascar fanatic but that was back when they were real stock cars. I have camped in the infield at Daytona several times and my father and I went to see the first race at Texas Motor Speedway when it opened in Bryon-College Station. It was also the first race for the winged Daytonas and Superbirds. I followed the Mopar and AMC drivers mostly and loved the competition between them before the field was leveled with rules. Modern Nascar is kind of boring to me.

My dad raised me on dirt track sprints and midget racing, Indy & drags too. I was 6 or 7 years old when I saw a brand new yellow Plymouth Superbird come down our street and I've been hooked on MoPars ever since. Stock cars sure aren't stock cars anymore, and I've always hated the restrictor plate and the over regulation of the sport, it has become a pretty boring game of follow the leader, but a pushrod V-8 that can sustain 7500 RPM for 3 hours is pretty incredible. Now let me lament the loss of the turbo chargers on the champ cars....and the shortening of the quarter mile by 320 feet....or......
