Odometer refurbish

Post by devildog80 »

Found a decent thread for odometer refurbish for mid 80's vehicle. Currently having issues with my own '84 GW the odometer stopped working.
The thread is not Jeep, but felt it would be very close to the older mechanical odometers we run on our CJ's, pre CJ's, and FSJ's across several decades using the same speedo's & clusters.

lube the cable with some motorcycle cable spray, the grease might be too solid

Not the "speed"ometer, but the "od"ometer that is frozen. Speedo works perfect, as worked it over a year ago, with lube in lower cable and new short cable from cruise to head unit so its good. Odometer had me calculating mileage at 4 mpg, with gas gauge barely moving, thought something suspect. It finally stopped turning, so going to work up a spare I have, then swap it in with current mileage showing.

The firm slap on the top of the dash pad sometimes helps

Yep....tried the slapping, tapping, anything else to try and get it moving, but no good. And if it did break loose again, do not think it would be reliable, so rebuilding another to swap in.
Thanks :)

The odometer and spedometer work together. So my guess is the whole unit needs replaced. And these things can be rolled back or foward by hand i think.

I recently discovered my spedo and odo dont work anymore not because of the cable everyone constantly says.

But the cable lead that goes into the spedo wore out the spedometer end. Its like a Square shape that the spedo cabke goes into. And its plastic and its a conplete circle now. So the spedo cable just spins in the circle with nothing to grab it anymore. This would explain (noise)you can hear in the dash sometimes too when driving

This piece? Take it out, and new cable mounts right to the housing. It engages far enough into where this plastic piece used to be, and have had no issues with my speedo since replacing the short cable from speed control, to speedo head unit. But odometer works apart from speedo, as the gears can get stuck, and not affect the speedo itself. Have checked my speedo against GPS, and within 1 mph between the two.
